After carding an opening round 310 on Monday, the Tritons came back with a much-improved 297 in Round 2, climbing five spots in the team standings. UCSD is currently tied with St. Martin's University at 31-over par, 607 through two rounds of play.
The two schools trail 13th place Minnesota State-Mankato by three strokes entering the third and final round on Wednesday.
Freshman Marc Herrmann continues to lead the way for the Tritons, following his opening round 75 with an even 72 on Tuesday. The San Diego native is tied with Chico State's Chris Doyle for 28th place overall at +3, 147.
Fellow rookie Jay Lim is four strokes back at 151, shooting a second round 75 after carding a 76 in Round 1. His score is good enough for a share of 50th place overall. Lim has a three-shot edge over teammate Lewis Simon, who is tied for 70th place at 154 after a 78 in the second round, while Jacob Williams is tied for 74th at 155 following a 72.
Freshman Austin Shuxiao is UCSD's fifth player in the tournament and he sits in 107th place after rounds of 83 and 81.
Despite a second round 294, Chico State is still leading the field heading into the final round. The Wildcats currently have a four-stroke advantage over second place Colorado School of Mines at -9, 567. The Orediggers shot a 288 on Tuesday and sit at -5, 571 through two rounds.
Host Grand Canyon is in third place at -3, 573 after carding a second round 288 as well.
The Orediggers' Jim Knous overtook Chico State's Kyle Souza for first place on the individual leaderboard, wrapping up the day at -8, 136. He shot a 70 in Round 2 after carding an opening round 66. Souza is just one stroke back in second place after an even 72 on Tuesday.
The third and final round of the NCAA Central/West Regional will get underway at 7:30 a.m. on Wednesday. The Tritons are scheduled to tee off starting at 8:20.
