SAN DIEGO - Launching into its final meet of the calendar year, the UC San Diego women's crew team sent three boats into the waters off Ski Beach in Mission Bay Park for the 2012 San Diego Fall Classic on Sunday and rowed to impressive finishes.
"Another solid weekend," said head coach Colin Truex. "We mixed up the lineups from last week, and we had some good racing across the board. SDSU had a very aggressive performance against us today and showed us that we still have some work to do."
The Tritons' trio of aquatic vessels competed during the morning against a pair of San Diego State boats in the Women's Collegiate 8+ event.
The UCSD "A" boat finished first among its fleet and second overall, with a time of 19:01.
UCSD's "B" boat was the second Triton craft to cross the finish, placing fourth overall to clock in a second below the 20-minute mark (19:59) and was just ahead of its sister, the UCSD "C" boat, which turned in a 20:11, fourth-place finish.
SDSU's "A" boat won the event in 18:34 and was trailed by the SDSU "B" team in third (19:08).
With nearly four months to go before the back end of his team's schedule begins, Truex was optimistic with Sunday's results but acknowledged the Tritons have considerable room for improvement if they hope to close the gap with the Aztecs.
"We will buckle down over the winter to improve our conditioning and hopefully post better results when we see SDSU again in the spring," Truex said. "Overall, I am pleased with the performance but know we have a lot of speed to gain."
The Tritons will kick off their spring schedule in a dual meet on Saturday, March 2, 2013. Held in Newport Beach with a 6 a.m. start time, the meet will have UCSD contending with boats from Long Beach State, UC Irvine and UC Santa Barbara.
