UC San Diego is currently ranked eighth in the nation according to the USA Today/ESPN Coaches poll released on Oct. 30. Of UCSD's first five opponents, three are ranked, including Grand Canyon at No. 13, Western Washington at No. 14 and Gannon at No. 15. Additionally, Simon Fraser is receiving votes in the poll. The Tritons finished their 2011-12 campaign ranked 10th and were listed as high as No. 1 for seven consecutive weeks.

This week's West Region Crossover Classic is the second of three regular season tournaments that the Tritons will play in this year. UCSD opened at the Disney Tip-Off West Coast Classic in Anaheim last week. On Nov. 23 and 24, the Tritons host the UCSD Thanksgiving Classic at RIMAC Arena in La Jolla, with Azusa Pacific, Cal State San Bernardino and Tampa also competing.

Seattle Pacific is off to a 2-0 start after downing both of its opponents at its own Sodexo Tip-Off Classic last week. The Falcons defeated Illinois Springfield (80-54) and Western State (62-46). Rachel Murray was named the tourney's MVP for the second straight year after totaling 27 points and 10 rebounds. SPU was picked to finish third in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference. Last season, the Falcons posted a 17-10 overall record with an 11-7 mark in the GNAC, good for a tie for third place.

Western Washington comes into the tourney ranked 14th in the nation. The Vikings have played three exhibition games so far, defeating British Columbia (71-51) and losing against Seattle in double overtime (100-93) and Oregon State (71-59). Britt Harris averaged 14.7 points and 8.0 rebounds over the three contests. WWU was picked to win the GNAC in the league's annual preseason coaches poll. In 2011-12, the Vikings finished at 22-8 overall and placed second in the league with a 14-4 mark. They advanced to the NCAA West Region semifinals, where they were defeated by UC San Diego, 81-66, in La Jolla.

UCSD broke a school record for victories last season, finishing at 30-3 overall. The Tritons won the CCAA regular season crown with a 21-1 mark and advanced to the finals of the NCAA West Regional. Ranked No. 1 in the nation for seven straight weeks, UCSD defeated Chico State and Western Washington in Regional play before falling to Alaska-Anchorage in the title game. Senior guard Chelsea Carlisle was named a WBCA All-American while four Tritons were named First Team All-CCAA. Head coach Charity Elliott was tabbed the West Region Coach of the Year.
