LA JOLLA, Calif. - The UC San Diego women's tennis team opened its season Saturday with a 6-3 victory against Azusa Pacific at Northview Courts.

UCSD won four of six singles match-ups and two of three doubles tilts to take the win over APU.

A pair of Triton freshman won their inaugural singles matches. At No. 2, Kyra Scott was triumphant against Cougar Danae Ingwaldson in straight sets (6-1, 6-1). Paula Chou toppled APU's Lindsey Yeom in three sets (6-4, 1-6, 6-1) at the No. 4 position.

Also earning singles wins were junior Tara Vanooteghem at No. 5 and senior Jacquelyn Davis at No. 6.

In doubles play, Chou and Davis paired up at No. 2 and posted an 8-3 win against Samantha Kaneta and Brejohn McCrary. Sophomore Melinda Chu and Vanooteghem won at No. 3, downing Kim Koetterheinrich and Yeom, also by an 8-3 score. 

"We played very well and this is a great start to the season," said UCSD head coach Liz LaPlante. "I'm very impressed with freshmen Kyra and Paula."

UCSD, ranked 32nd nationally in NCAA Division II, plays at Point Loma Nazarene on Tuesday, Feb. 5 (2:30 p.m.).
