HONOLULU, Hawaii - The 15th-ranked UC San Diego women's water polo team dropped a 17-4 decision to No. 2 Stanford Friday afternoon at the Hawaii Spring Break Tournament.
UCSD (14-10) struggled to keep up early on, as Stanford (19-1) got out to a 6-0 lead in the first quarter and kept the Tritons scoreless through the opening half of play.
Down 9-0 at halftime, UCSD's first goal of the game came from Sarah Lizotte at 7:12 of the third quarter. With a chance to make a small run, the Tritons drew their first ejection of the afternoon, but were unable to connect on the man-up situation. Stanford scored four goals in the third, taking a 13-1 lead into the final quarter of play.
UCSD posted its strongest attack in the fourth, beginning with a penalty shot drawn on Catherine Carpenter. Alexis Wieseler converted the shot and gave the Tritons their second goal of the game. Both Lizotte and Jolene Guiliana tacked on one goal apiece in the final two minutes of play.
Both Guiliana and Julia Kirkland led the team with three steals apiece, while six others recorded one or more of their own.
Courtney Miller played the full game in goal for the Tritons, coming away with six saves and one assist.
A total of 11 players scored for the Cardinal.
The Tritons conclude tournament play in Hawaii on Saturday, March 30, with games against No. 8 Hawaii (1:30 p.m.) and No. 17 UC Santa Barbara (6:30 p.m.).
