Nine Tritons Score As UCSD Defeats Cal State San Bernardino
Release: Friday 04/19/2013

LA JOLLA, Calif. -  The No. 13 UC San Diego women's water polo team finished up the Western Water Polo Association (WWPA) regular season schedule Friday with a 15-4 win over Cal State San Bernardino at Canyonview Pool.

The Tritons, now on their second eight-game win streak of the season, complete league play with a perfect 7-0 record and sit at 22-12 overall. The Coyotes now hold a 0-7 record in the WWPA and are 6-26 overall.

All 17 members of the squad received playing time as Rachel Brooks and Julia Kirkland led the Tritons, each posting hat tricks. Juniors Melissa Bartow and Sarah Lizotte each tallied two, while Alexis Wieseler, Rachel Fisher, Lauren Finwall, Jolene Guiliana and Laurel Kistler netted one apiece.

The Tritons outscored the Coyotes in three out of the four quarters, coming away with four in the opening eight minutes of play. After winning the initial sprint, Guiliana scored the first goal of the game a minute in. One unanswered goal by Kirkland and two from Lizotte would boost UCSD to a 4-1 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Both squads worked the set offense through the majority of the second quarter without finishing it in the net until the 2:23 mark when Wieseler scored the first goal of the quarter on a 6-on-5 opportunity. CSUSB's Crystal Curran answered back about two minutes later to make the score 5-2.

In what the Tritons thought would be the final possession of the half, Brooks scored her first goal of the game with just eight seconds left on the clock. Misty Vu caught the Tritons off guard, netting a Coyote goal just as the buzzer would sound for half to make it 6-3 heading into the break.

UCSD poured on the goals in the third, scoring a game high of seven, with both Brooks and Bartow posting two apiece.

CSUSB's final goal came at the 4:47 mark of the third quarter as UCSD held them scoreless through the remainder of the third, as well as the entire fourth quarter.

Courtney Miller finished with seven saves in cage after three quarters of play, while Alexsee Wilcox added one.

UCSD will complete its regular season schedule at San Diego State on Saturday, Apr. 20 at the Aztec Aquaplex for the 12th annual Harper Cup. The game is set to begin at 1:00 p.m.
