The women will run a 2.5-mile course and the men will go 4 miles.
"We are excited to get started with the racing and I think that it is great that some of the other schools from San Diego, plus CCAA rival Cal State L.A., are going to be joining us to kick off this season." - UCSD head coach Nate Garcia
UCSD has been hosting this opening meet for over 15 years. It began as a dual against crosstown rival Point Loma Nazarene, but expanded to multiple invitees in 2003. Last season, the Triton men dominated, placing first over PLNU and Long Beach City College. Kellen Levy won the race in 21:39.2 as UCSD took 14 of the top 15 spots. The Triton women placed second overall behind San Diego State and in front of Cal State L.A., PLNU and Cal State San Bernardino. Chia Chang was UCSD's top finisher, taking third with a time of 15:20.8. For complete results from the 2012 event, click here.
This season's rosters feature many student-athletes from the San Diego area. The men's list includes Carlos Bojorquez (San Diego/Kearny HS), Brendan Gee (Rancho Bernardo/Rancho Bernardo HS), Mike Kloha (San Diego/Westview HS) and Matt Lenehan (San Diego/Torrey Pines HS). Women hailing from San Diego County include Raelene Dearmas (Chula Vista/Bonita Vista Senior HS), Isabella Gallo (San Diego/Westview HS), Paige Hughes (San Diego/Valhalla HS), Michelle Le Roux (San Diego/Rancho Bernardo HS), Ella Verhees (San Diego/Point Loma HS) and Amanda Weber (San Diego/Westview HS).
O CAPTAINS! MY CAPTAINS!
Five Tritons earned captain roles this season, including juniors Alia Bales and Anneke Kakebeen and senior Ximena Cruz on the women's side, as well as seniors Mario Flores and Kellen Levy for the men.
UP IN THE AIR
UCSD recently spent 10 days in the Mammoth Lakes region for a high-altitude training camp, returning to La Jolla on Wednesday, Sept. 4. Click here to view a photo gallery from the trip.
"Our trip to Mammoth was a great success. The team came together really well and we got some excellent training in. The altitude added a challenge to the work that we were doing that really served to toughen up our group for the coming season." - UCSD head coach Nate Garcia
Multiple Tritons picked up awards following the 2012 California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Championships, which were hosted by UCSD in La Jolla. Scott Acton and Marie Diaz were each named a CCAA Freshman of the Year, while Tanner Collins earned All-CCAA status by virtue of his 15th-place finish in the men's 8k race.
HEAD COACH NATE GARCIA
Former Triton student-athlete Nate Garcia is in his seventh season as head coach of the UCSD cross country program. He took over the reins in 2007 after spending five seasons as an assistant coach.
