PASO ROBLES, Calif. - Following Monday's first two rounds of the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Championships at Hunter Ranch Golf Course, the UC San Diego men sit in fifth place of eight teams.

UCSD shot a 285 in the opening round and followed with a 295 in the second for a total of 580, 4-over par.

Cal State Monterey Bay, ranked fourth nationally, fired a 20-under par 556 (282-274) and currently leads the field. The Otters are seven strokes in front of second place Cal State Stanislaus. The host and 11th-ranked Warriors shot a 282 and a 281 for a 563 total, -13. Also coming in under par was third place Sonoma State, which finished with a 1-under 575 (286-289).

Following the top three are reigning champion and 25th-ranked Chico State in fourth (287-289--576), Cal State East Bay in sixth (295-301--596), Cal State San Bernardino in seventh (298-303--601) and Cal State Dominguez Hills in eighth (314-325--639).

In the individual standings, UCSD freshman Clayton Yamaguchi is tied for fourth after carding a 3-under 141 with rounds of 69 and 72. He is one of 13 players under par. Yamaguchi ranked third in par-4 scoring (3.90, -2) and was tied for second among all players with 12 birdies.

On top of the leaderboard is Brandon Hortt from Cal State Monterey Bay. He shot a 67 and a 64, good for a 13-under par 131. Hortt's 64 in the second round was the lowest score of the day. The Warriors own the next two spots in the form of Trevor Clayton (67-70--137) and Tyler Barker (69-71--140).

Also competing for the Tritons are Lewis Simon (T-15th, 71-74--145), Jay Lim (T-17th, 73-73--146), Jacob Williams (T-20th, 72-76--148) and Daniel Yang (T-26th, 74-77--151). Simon recorded 29 pars, the most by any player.

The Tritons were in second place after round one, just three strokes behind Monterey Bay and Stanislaus, which were tied for first.

At last year's conference championships, the Tritons were fourth after the first day of play and ended up finishing third, their best placing since joining the NCAA Division II ranks in 2001.
