Eric Steidlmayer
Head Coach

Eric Steidlmayer, a UC San Diego graduate, begins his 14th season as head coach of the Tritons' men's tennis team in 2011-12.

Regarded as one of the best tennis teachers in the country, Steidlmayer's passion for the game and his competitive nature are evidenced by his team's tenacity and fiery perseverance.

During his first 13 seasons on the La Jolla campus, Steidlmayer has amassed a .633 winning percentage, posting 169 victories over 267 matches. He is the winningest men's tennis coach in UCSD history.

The 2011 season certainly helped lift Steidlmayer's win percentage as he led the Tritons to a perfect 20-0 record in dual matches. For the 12th straight year, UCSD advanced to NCAA postseason play as it was the West Region's top seed and received a free pass to the round of 16. The Tritons were ranked 10th in the final national poll and senior Erik Elliott picked up ITA All-America honors.

In 2010 the Tritons recorded a 12-11 mark for the second straight season. UCSD earned the West Region's third seed in the NCAA Tournament, resulting in a trip to Hawaii where the Tritons suffered a tough 5-1 loss to second-seeded BYU-Hawaii.

The 2009 regular season ended on a high note with a 5-4 upset of UC Santa Cruz. Steidlmayer's team earned the No. 4 seed in the West Regional and fell to top-seeded Hawaii Pacific, but not before Samuel Ling and Naveen Dixit recorded a win in doubles competition.

In 2008, the Tritons advanced to the NCAA D-II National Championships after defeating BYU-Hawaii in the West Regional by a 5-0 score. In the round of 16, the Tritons were edged by Drury, 5-2. The doubles tandems of Eric Rubens and Alex Placek and Bijan Moallemi and Erik Elliott both earned points for UCSD.

In 2007, UCSD had its best-ever national finish, completing a season in which it finished third nationally with an 18-7 overall record. UCSD defeated Northwest Missouri State in the round of 16 by a 5-0 score before disposing of 8th-ranked Barry University in the national quarterfinals by a 5-2 margin. The team's season came to an end in the national semifinals, but not before a fight, as the Tritons played No. 5 Valdosta State very competitively before falling, 5-1.

The 18 wins during the 2007 campaign included four against NCAA D-I opponents and another two against UC Santa Cruz (the NCAA D-III National Champion) and Azusa Pacific (the NAIA Division I National Runners-Up). Additionally, juniors Blake Meister and Eric Rubens were honored as ITA All-Americans after posting a 19-4 record together at the top spot on the doubles ladder.

The squad went 14-10 in 2006 and qualified for the NCAA Division II Tournament, advancing to the round of 16 before falling to Lynn University by a narrow 5-3 margin. Lynn was the 2006 NCAA D-II National Runner-Up. Without enough teams in the West Region, Steidlmayer's squad played with no conference affiliation during the year, forcing the Tritons to play one of the toughest Division II schedules in the country. In 2006, the Tritons played 11 matches against NCAA D-I schools. Steidlmayer's team notched an 8-1 record against D-II institutions.

Steidlmayer guided the Tritons to a 15-7 record in 2005. The team won its first three postseason matches and advanced to the NCAA D-II Quarterfinals. UCSD finished in fifth place overall after losing to Armstrong Atlantic State, which was ranked No. 2 in the final ITA poll.

Steidlmayer's squad posted a record of 18-10 in 2004.

A 1996 UC San Diego graduate who played three years on the Triton tennis team, Steidlmayer served as an assistant coach for two seasons at UC Davis prior to returning to La Jolla.

While attending UCSD, he was named the Tritons' Most Valuable Player after helping them earn a berth in the 1996 D-III National Championships.

Steidlmayer earned a Master's Degree in economics from UC Davis in the fall of 1998.

Widely respected for his coaching prowess, Steidlmayer also serves the NCAA tennis community by serving on the NCAA Division II Tennis Championship committee. He also served as the Chairman for the Championship Committee during the 2007-08 season.
