Four Tritons Set to Compete at ITA Regional Championships Held in Los Angeles

LA JOLLA, Calif. - With the Intercollegiate Tennis
Association Regional Championships just two weeks away, the UC San Diego men's
tennis team will be aiming for a strong showing, similar to the 2009 competition.
"We decided to send our two captains, Sam Ling and Vincent Nguyen, and the two
players that performed the best during the offseason in tournaments: Erik
Elliott and Austin West," UCSD head coach Eric Steidlmayer said. "I expect Erik
and Austin to contend for the doubles title and Erik to make a run in singles.
We're looking for the others to compete as well and we know it will be a good
challenge to go out and battle the best in the region."
The tournament, to be held from Sept. 30 to Oct. 2 at the Cal State L.A.
campus, marks the start of the fall season for the Tritons. UCSD finished the
spring season at 12-10 overall and earned its 11th-straight NCAA Division II
postseason bid before falling to BYU-Hawaii in the first round.
At last year's ITA regional competition, two Tritons advanced to the tournament
semifinals in singles before being dealt close losses. Elliott, named an
ITA Player to Watch at the end of the 2010 season, earned a 6-0, 6-4 victory
over Sonoma State's Anthony Rollins in the quarterfinals before falling to BYUH's
Agnel Peter, 6-2, 2-6 (10-8). Jake Fellow topped teammate Armaun Emami in the
quarterfinals but later dropped a 6-4, 6-2 decision to SSU's Conner Olson.
The UCSD squad featured a stellar doubles duo of Emami and West, as the
pair advanced out of the ITA West Region competition to compete in the National
Small College Championships. After topping SSU's top doubles pair to advance
out of their region, Emami and West took down Midwestern State's Vjekoslav
Stipanic and Bo Ziputovic in a quarterfinal match before falling to duos from
Francis Marion and Bloomsburg.
The Tritons' group of four that will be competing Sept. 30 to Oct. 2 will look
to advance out of Los Angeles and move on to play at the Copeland-Cox Tennis
Center in Mobile, Ala., the same site that West and Emami visited last season during their doubles run.
