UCSD Tops Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, Starts Strong at USTA Tournament

LA JOLLA, Calif. - The UC San Diego men's tennis team increased its perfect record to 9-0 after a 5-4 win over Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Thursday afternoon at Northview Tennis Courts.

The Tritons hand the Stags (6-1) their first loss on the season after UCSD captured four singles matches after losing two of the first three doubles matches. Erik Elliott and Austin West won their respective singles matches and also paired to defeated Frank Liu/Ron Wu, 8-2 in doubles play.

In addition to West and Elliot, Max Jiganti defeated his singles opponent in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1. Chapman Chan went the distance against CMS' Alex Johnson, falling 4-6 in the opening set before recovering, 6-1, 6-4 for the victory.

UCSD also began competition at the 122nd Pacific Coast Men's Doubles Championships at La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club on Thursday afternoon. Jake Fellow and Rajeev Herekar defeated Jeffrey Eicher and Conan Lorenzo, 6-2, 6-0, and will advance to play at 9:30 a.m. on Friday.

The other UCSD pair of Jiganti and Maxence Dutreix fell in its opening round match on Thursday to a pair from the University of San Diego, 2-6, 4-6.

In addition to Fellow-Herekar and Jiganti-Dutreix, UCSD will have four more pairs competing in their first round matches on Friday.
