LA JOLLA, Calif. - The No. 16 UC San Diego men's tennis team competed Thursday on the first day of action at the 123rd Annual Pacific Coast Doubles Championships, held at the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club.

Chapman Chan and Max Jiganti defeated independent players Arturo Navarro and Manuel Ortiz, 7-6 (4), 1-6, 6-1, and will move on to the round of 64 in the main draw. They'll take on Addison Appleby and Ryan Rosen, also independents, Friday at 10:30 a.m. Jiganti, along with teammate Maxence Dutreix, advanced to the consolation bracket quarterfinals in last year's tournament.

Kona Luu and Jason Wall lost to independents Jack McCullers and Tyler Pham, 7-6 (5), 6-4. Mark Meyer teamed up with Sam Ling, forcing three sets but falling to independents Donald Johnson and Jacob Johnson, 2-6, 7-6 (1), 6-4. Meyer was originally scheduled to play with Andrew Malozsak, but the team did not finish due to injury.

The losing squads will now play in the tournament's consolation draw.

The UCSD teams of Austin West/Devon Sousa and Eric Steidlmayer/Michael Meyer will play their first round matches Friday. West and Sousa go up against independents Scott Kintz and Scott Lippitt at 8 a.m., while Steidlmayer and Meyer play Stanford's Jamin Ball and Walker Kehrer at 10 a.m.

The tournament, the second-oldest in the United States, runs through Sunday.
