LA JOLLA, Calif. - The No. 16 UC San Diego men's tennis team continued competition Friday at the 123rd Annual Pacific Coast Doubles Championships, held at the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club.
UCSD head coach Eric Steidlmayer played as an independent entrant along with Michael Meyer and defeated Stanford's Jamin Ball and Walker Kehrer, 6-4, 6-3, in the first round of the main draw Friday. They lost to Nikol Bubnic and Patrick Pohlmann of the University of San Diego, 6-2, 7-5, in the main draw's round of 64 later in the day.
Austin West and Devon Sousa fell in their first main draw match to independents Scott Kintz and Scott Lippit in three sets, landing them in the consolation bracket. There, West and Sousa defeated independents Eddie Sengendo-Kimera and Alexander Tyner, 6-2, 6-2. They drew a bye for the round of 64 and will next face Villanova's Kyle Grandin and Mark Miller in the round of 32 on Saturday.
The UCSD duos that suffered losses in the first round of the main draw Thursday were relegated to the consolation bracket. Both pairs drew first and second round byes. Junya Yoshida will join Jason Wall Saturday against USC's Yannick Hanfmann and Eric Johnson in the round of 32. Sam Ling and Mark Meyer are set to face UC Berkeley's Nicholas Andrews and Christoffer Konigsfeldt, also in the round of 32.
The tournament, the second-oldest in the United States, runs through Sunday.
