SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The UC San Diego men's rowing team wrapped up competition Sunday at the 40th San Diego Crew Classic with three boats competing in petit final races.
UCSD's JV 8 crew won gold in the Sharp Cabrillo Cup petit final, recording a time of 6:18.50 on the 2,000-meter course. The Tritons edged out second-place UCLA by less than a second in the photo finish. UC Santa Barbara was third, Orange Coast College placed fourth, UC Irvine was fifth and Santa Clara took sixth.
The Varsity 8 Cal Cup petit final was extremely close as well, with UCSD placing second in 6:12.85, just .15 behind winner Oklahoma City. The Tritons finished ahead of Washington State, San Diego, Bates and Santa Clara.
UCSD was involved in yet another tight finish in the Open 8 petit final. UC Santa Barbara crossed first with a time of 6:27.50, followed by the Tritons in 6:29.00. The Loyola alumni boat was third, while Portland State placed fourth, UCLA was fifth and Chapman was sixth.
On Saturday evening, UCSD's Novice 8 boat raced in the petit final of the Derek Guelker Memorial Cup, taking second place in 6:33.50. The University of San Diego posted a top time of 6:26.57. San Diego State was third, Washington State finished fourth, British Columbia was fifth and USC placed sixth.
Up next, the Tritons will host the Class Day Regatta on Saturday, April 13, on Mission Bay. It will be UCSD's final competition before heading into championship season.
