LA JOLLA, Calif. - Five Tritons had 10 or more kills as the 12th-ranked UC San Diego women's volleyball team defeated league opponent Chico State, 3-1, Friday night at RIMAC Arena.
Scores of the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) match were 25-19, 18-25, 25-13 and 26-24. The win moved UCSD to 19-3 overall and 11-3 in the conference. CSUC fell under .500 at 10-11 and is now an even 7-7 in CCAA play.
The Tritons remain deadlocked with Sonoma State for second place in the CCAA. The Seawolves beat Cal State L.A. in four sets in Rohnert Park Friday.
Middle blocker Sara McCutchan led UCSD with 16 kills and 18.0 points, both match-highs. She hit .577 with one error in 26 attacks and also added four block assists.
Also hitting double-digit kill totals were Caitlin Brenton (15), Danielle Dahle (11), Sophie Rowe (11) and Kameron Cooper (10). Brenton matched McCutchan with 18.0 points, adding an ace and three blocks (one solo) to her totals. Dahle had 18 digs and four blocks, while Rowe also completed a double-double with a team-high 22 digs.
Triton setter Heidi Sierks finished with 49 assists and 19 digs, matching a career-high.
For the Wildcats, Alex Shurtz posted a double-double with 15 kills and 14 digs. Natalie Nordahl had 12 kills, while Emily Duran led all players with 26 digs.
UCSD out-hit CSUC, .240 (64-20-183) to .139 (49-21-176). The Wildcats held a 12.0 to 9.0 advantage in blocks. UC San Diego sided out at 62 percent, while Chico was at 53 percent.
The Tritons swept the regular season series as they won, 3-1, in Chico on Sept. 28.
UCSD hosts CCAA opponent Cal State Stanislaus Saturday night at 7 p.m. The Warriors (7-15, 4-10 CCAA) were swept by league-leading and 13th-ranked Cal State San Bernardino Friday at Coussoulis Arena.
