No. 11 UCSD Scores 34 Goals to Sweep Action on Day One of the Claremont Convergence

POMONA, Calif. – No. 11 UC San Diego opened the Claremont Convergence with two wins Friday at Axelrood Pool. The Tritons defeated Occidental 16-1 in the opener behind three shutout quarters on the defensive end and earned a win in the nightcap over Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, 18-9, behind eight first quarter goals.

The Tritons improve to 13-7 with the pair of wins.

UCSD was led by eight total scores from Jolene Guiliana and six goals from Lauren Boyer in the pair of victories. The defense was spearheaded by Courtney Miller and Alexsee Wilcox in the cage, who finished with eight and nine saves, respectively.

Game One
The Tritons received three shutout quarters from Miller and Wilcox in the cage, while the offense found the back of the net with three or more goals in each quarter to win 16-1 in the opener.

UCSD jumped out to a 7-0 lead at the intermission and poured in six more goals in the third to take a 13-0 advantage into the final period. The Tigers scored at the 4:00 minute mark with the score 14-1 before the Tritons closed out the win with two more goals.

Guiliana and Lauren Boyer led the offense with a hat trick each, while Julia Kirkland and Laurel Kistler also found the back of the cage twice. Karen Henry, Andie Nishimi, Sarah Lizotte, Emma Sasson, Lauren Finwall and Lani Tittle rounded out the scoring with a tally each. Guiliana also tallied three assists to add to her line, while Henry and Leah Gonzales finished with a pair of assists.

Miller finished with three saves, while Wilcox finished with four blocks for UCSD.

Game Two
In the nightcap, The Tritons scored eight first quarter goals to take control of the game and win 18-9.

After leading 8-0 after the first period, UCSD poured in five goals tallies to lead 13-4 at the half. The Tritons scored three more times in the third compared to a pair of scores from the Athenas. UCSD finished off the victory by finding the back of the cage twice.

Guiliana scored a career-high five goals in the victory, while Lizotte and Boyer recorded a hat trick each. Kirkland and Finwall finished with a pair of scores as well. The scoring was rounded out by a goal from Nishimi, Gonzales and Kistler apiece. Lizotte added three assists to her line to lead UCSD.

The cage was split between Miller and Wilcox, who finished with five saves each.

UCSD continues play at the Claremont Convergence tomorrow with a pair of games. The Tritons face No. 13 Hawaii for the second time this season at 1 p.m. before finishing the Invite against Pomona-Pitzer at 5 p.m.
