Pimentel and Bojorquez Lead Tritons Saturday at Sun Angel Classic, Pomona-Pitzer Invitational
Release: Saturday 04/12/2014

CLAREMONT, Calif. and TEMPE, Ariz. - The UC San Diego men’s and women’s track and field programs split up to compete in two meets in separate states Saturday.

A large majority of UCSD student-athletes stayed more local and participated in the 28th Annual Pomona-Pitzer Invitational at Strehle Track on the campus of Pomona College. Thirteen Tritons were on Joe Selleh Track at Sun Angel Stadium in Tempe, Ariz., for the 35th Sun Angel Classic hosted by Arizona State University.

In Arizona against primarily a Division I field, junior All-American Sabrina Pimentel was the highlight, breaking the school record in the 800 meters (2:09.07) in placing fifth in the premiere section. She fell a mere .07 seconds shy of officially booking her trip to the NCAA Championships in May, but eclipsed Lindsey Stalker’s previous school standard of 2:10.33 from 2005, moving up from No. 2 (2:10.90).

Junior Carlos Bojorquez won the 800 meters (1:51.10) with freshman teammate and fellow San Diego product Jared Senese in third (1:52.33). It was an NCAA provisional time in a second event for Bojorquez, after the 1500 meters, and puts him all the way up at No. 2 on the all-time UCSD chart. Senese, No. 6 on that list, also already has a pro mark in the 800.

Junior All-American Nash Howe was fourth in the javelin premiere (202’8”), with former Triton national champion, school record-holder and older brother Nick Howe, competing for his club team, turning in the second-longest throw of 223’7”. Anthony Capitulo was third in the open javelin (188’10”).

Senior Clint Rosser shared second place in the pole vault (15’9.25”). Senior All-American Lauren Irish timed 1:03.09 to place third behind Boise State’s Megan Kelley (1:02.39) and Texas A&M’s Jessica Laseak (1:02.83) in the 400 hurdles. Sean Cook was fifth in the long jump premiere (21’8”) and Lorato Anderson was sixth (2:16.98) in the 800.

Haley Libuit was seventh in the javelin (129’5”) while fellow sophomore Kristin Sato was 13th in the triple jump (37’8.5”).

In Claremont, Chrissi Carr improved a full foot in finishing second in the pole vault, moving up to No. 6 all-time at UCSD with an NCAA provisional mark of 11’11.75”.

Keith Rose was seventh in the 100-meter dash (10.89), while Emmanuel Elijah won his heat and matched his season best of 11.09 in 21st. Janay Pierce was 15th on the women’s side (12.57) in a field featuring 2012 U.S. Olympian Lashinda Demus in second (11.89).

Freshman Jackie Chalmers’ 56.87 was the top time by a Triton in 2014 in the 400 and left her in 16th in the event and seventh on the program’s all-time chart. Kristen Daugherty had the top UCSD mark in placing fourth in the high jump (5’5”). Former Triton standout Linda Rainwater won the event with a top height of 5’10.75”.

Tanner Collins placed 15th in the 1500 with a season-best mark of 3:57.28. In the women’s 1500, freshman Ella Verhees (San Diego/Point Loma HS) and Marie Diaz were 12th (4:40.44) and 16th (4:42.20), both with season-best times by over five seconds. Five other Tritons, three men and two women, also turned in season bests in the distance.

Adam Augustyn (15.17) and Kevin Chiao (15.28) went 6-11 in the 110 hurdles.

The UCSD track and field programs will again be in multiple locations in the week ahead, between the California Invitational, Mt. SAC Relays and Soka Peace Invitational.
