LA JOLLA, Calif. – UC San Diego snapped its five-game California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) losing streak with two wins over Cal State Dominguez Hills Friday at Triton Softball Field. Alexis Edwards and Jennifer Manuel delivered strong starts inside the circle to power UCSD to a 3-2 win in the opener and 4-0 victory in the nightcap, respectively.
Edwards earned a complete game win in the opener before Manuel out-did her in game two, throwing her first complete-game shutout of the season.
The Tritons improve to 32-13 overall and 21-9 in CCAA play following the pair of victories, while the Toros fall to 16-34 overall and 10-25 in league play.
The game featured two familiar faces on opposite sides of the field, as head coach Patti Gerckens was facing former player and UCSD alum Kim Aggabao, the head coach of CSUDH. It was the first ever meeting between the two as head coaches.
Edwards was the difference in the opener and tossed her 12th complete game of the season to power UCSD to the 3-2 win over the Toros.
The sophomore lefty snapped her three-game losing streak inside the circle and picked up her 18th win of the season, putting her tied for sixth with current assistant Camille Gaito on the UCSD all-time single-season list.
Her line consisted of seven frames, six hits, two runs (none earned), three strikeouts and no walks. She induced 11 groundouts on the afternoon.
The offense backed the quality start with three runs on seven hits, led by two from Caitlin Brown. The senior also finished an RBI, bringing her eight short of the UCSD all-time career record.
After falling behind 1-0 after two innings, the Tritons knotted the game at one in the third. Kirsten Willmon opened the frame with a single through the left side and was sacrificed to second by McKenna Clewett. She was brought home on an RBI single to left field from Emily McQuaid.
The Toros answered the next half, scoring a run on two hits and a Triton error to jump back ahead 2-1.
UCSD responded, however, and took control of the game with two in the bottom of the fourth on three hits. Amani Proctor led off with a double and reached third after Romero reached on an error. Katie Saunders followed with an RBI groundout to score Proctor before Brown brought home Romero with an RBI bunt single.
The Tritons sealed the 3-2 win behind Edwards, who retired the Toros in order the final three innings.
Similar to game one, the nightcap was highlighted by the Triton starting pitcher. Manuel proved up to the task by delivering her seventh career complete-game shutout. The win marked her seventh of the season.
The senior allowed two hits, walked two and struck out three in the gem. She lowered her ERA to 2.88 following the win.
The Tritons led from start-to-finish after opening the game with a run in the first, and tallied a single run in the second, fifth and sixth frames, respectively, to win 4-0.
UCSD finished with 10 hits, giving them 24 games with 10 or more hits. Callie Grant led the offense with two knocks, while eight other Tritons finished with one hit.
Proctor and Romero put the Tritons on the scoreboard first in the opening frame, as each recorded a two-out hit. Proctor doubled to left field and was brought home by Mya Romero, who singled to shortstop.
The Tritons scored the final three runs on an RBI single from Grant, a sacrifice fly from Proctor and a pinch-hit RBI double from Bianca Devoto.
The CCAA set continues tomorrow at Triton Softball Field with a doubleheader starting at 12 p.m. UCSD seniors McQuaid, Brown, Manuel, Romero and Willmon will be honored at 11:30 a.m. as they play their final home games. The five seniors helped bring in the program’s first National Championship, a National Runner-Up finish and an NCAA Regional appearance the past three seasons. The senior class currently holds a .674 winning percentage, the highest in the Division II era.
