A total of 150 students participated in the event, which featured several sport stations where they could learn from and compete with Triton student-athletes. UCSD athletics staff as well as representatives from the men's and women's basketball, women's soccer, cross country, and track and field teams were on hand to instruct the Preuss students in everything from ping pong to speed and agility drills to relay races.
Other activities included "knock out" and dribbling/shooting drills at the basketball station, footwork drills and scrimmages at the soccer station, and agility ladder drills and team building at the track and field station. The Preuss students also got the opportunity to hit the pool and scale the climbing wall at the Canyonview Aquatic Complex.
The event served as part of Preuss' sixth grade camp and provided a great opportunity for the students to interact with Triton student-athletes.
"Sports Day with the UCSD athletes was one of the most talked about day of the entire camp," said Preuss sixth grade department chair Danielle Agliam. "Every student was active through the entire day and trying new things. Seeing students traverse the climbing wall, which most have never done before, was a gift in itself. Each year the day at the pool is the highlight of camp and I think this year we set the bar even higher.
"Thank you again to all the UCSD staff, faculty and student-athletes who made this day possible."
"We had a great, great time today," Brian McManus, head coach of the UCSD women's soccer program said. "The kids from Preuss were absolutely fantastic and they came eager to learn and participate. I know my athletes had a lot of fun with them and enjoyed every minute of their time together."
Located on the UCSD campus, the Preuss School is a charter middle and high school dedicated to providing a rigorous college prep education for motivated low-income students who will become the first in their families to graduate from college.
The Preuss School's mission includes the development of strong character, healthy lifestyles, good judgment, ethical behavior and instilling a sense of service to one's home community.
