LONG BEACH, Calif. - After winning its fifth consecutive California Collegiate Athletic Association Commissioner's Cup last spring for the 2009-10 season, UC San Diego was presented with the trophy at the conference's Presidents and Chancellors Group meetings on Wednesday in Long Beach.

CCAA Commissioner Robert J. Hiegert, along with Apple Computer's representatives Anne VanMiddlesworth and Jay Matheson, presented UC San Diego Director of Athletics Earl W. Edwards and Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs Dr. Penny Rue with the glass trophy and an Apple MacBook Pro computer.

The Commissioner's Cup is presented in association with Apple Computer and is awarded to the CCAA member institution with the highest aggregate ranking in eight of the CCAA's 13 championship sport offerings.

UCSD totaled 19 points to narrowly beat out Chico State, which finished second with 20 points. It was the closest finish in the five-year history of the program. The previous closest margin came in 2007-08, when the Tritons edged the Wildcats by 2.5 points.

UC San Diego captured CCAA titles in baseball, women's basketball and women's tennis, and finished second in women's cross country, women's volleyball, men's track and field, women's track and field, and tied for second in women's soccer.

Chico State won conference crowns in men's cross country, women's cross country, men's track and field and women's track field. The Wildcats finished third in women's basketball and were fourth in baseball and softball.

Cal Poly Pomona finished third with 25.5 points, followed by Cal State San Bernardino (31), Cal State L.A. (34.5), Cal State Dominguez Hills (35.5), Sonoma State (38), Cal State Stanislaus (39.5), Humboldt State (41.5), San Francisco State (49.5), Cal State Monterey Bay (52.5) and Cal State East Bay (81).

An institution's Commissioner's Cup ranking is calculated using its top two league finishes in the fall, winter and spring sports seasons, as well as the highest two remaining finishes, regardless of season. An institution's numerical finish for team sports is determined by regular season standings, and individual sports finishes are determined by the finishes of the season-ending championship event.

Team sports are soccer, volleyball, basketball, tennis, baseball and softball. Individual sports are cross country, men's golf and track and field. Institutions winning the conference tournament in the sports of men's basketball, women's basketball, men's soccer, women's soccer, softball and baseball deduct one (1) point from their regular season finish in those respective sports.
