LA JOLLA, Calif. - The UC San Diego Athletics Department will hold a memorial and vigil in honor of former women's volleyball player Karen Reis on Thursday evening at RIMAC Arena on campus. A four-year letterwinner with the Tritons from 2006-09, Reis was tragically killed in Coronado in the early morning hours on New Year's Day.

Thursday's event is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m. and is open to the public. A short program is planned and a tribute video prepared by Reis' former UCSD volleyball teammates will be shown.

Attendees will have the opportunity to share their thoughts and memories and otherwise celebrate the life of Reis, who had a tremendous impact on so many individuals in the San Diego volleyball community and beyond.

After redshirting her first year with the program in 2005, Reis played a critical role for a Triton squad that posted a cumulative record of 96-21 (.821) and earned a berth in the NCAA Tournament each of the next four seasons. For her career, she appeared in a total of 105 matches, playing in 338 sets, and tallied 65 kills, 25 assists, 89 service aces and 493 digs. She had a career hitting percentage of .133.

In addition to her efforts on the volleyball court, Reis was actively involved in the UCSD Athletics Department and the community. She was a three-year member of Triton Athletes' Council, UCSD's student-athlete leadership board, and was honored with the department's prestigious Husar Family/TAA Award for her dedication to community service in 2009.

A native of Bakersfield, Calif., Reis graduated from UC San Diego's Warren College with a degree in Cognitive Science in 2010. She coached youth volleyball locally and worked at Trader Joes in La Jolla.
