PASADENA, Calif. - The UC San Diego fencing teams opened their fall seasons Sunday with dominating performances against fellow Intercollegiate Fencing Conference of Southern California (IFCSC) rivals at the Collegiate Open, hosted by Caltech.

UCSD won gold in four of six events, two each for the men and women.

In men's sabre, freshman Travis Tibbitts finished first overall in a field of 25 competitors. The Tritons owned the podium as Bryson Abilay was second and Drew Dickinson and Peter Meckling tied for third.

UCSD's Adam Campbell-Kruger took first in men's epee for the second consecutive year. Justin Smith of UC Irvine was second while Triton freshman Eduard Zilinskiy and UC Santa Barbara's Alex Maitan tied for third among 17 competitors.

Men's foil was the lone event that UCSD did not win. Arizona State's Jack Reznick took gold while Triton Keric Moore placed second. UC San Diego's Jeffrey Chan and USC's Kai Hei George Yeung tied for third. The field consisted of 31 fencers.

The Tritons owned the top seven finishes in women's sabre. Junior Munira Gesner won the gold medal and sister Megan, a freshman, was second. Elizabeth Shimei and Alexandra Stanley were third. Munira Gesner also won the sabre at the 2011 Collegiate Open at UC Irvine.

UCSD again swept the podium spots in a women's foil field of 16 as freshman Nicole Chiang was first, classmate Alina Marshall was second and Rosalyn Lim and Victoria Parra were third.

Claremont's Lillian Haynes was first in women's epee and was followed by four Tritons - Andrea Gory in second, Natalie Chan and Moriah Kreeger in third and freshman Laura Hawkins in fifth.

UCSD will be back in action when it hosts the 17th Annual BladeRunner Tournament on Saturday, Nov. 3 and Sunday, Nov. 4.
