Rank and File
UC San Diego enters the season ranked eighth in the nation according to the USA Today/ESPN Coaches poll released on Oct. 30. The Tritons finished their 2011-12 campaign ranked 10th and were listed as high as No. 1 for seven consecutive weeks. This season's opening poll has Ashland ranked first, followed by Bentley in second and Pittsburg State in third. Two out of three of UCSD's opponents at Disney's Tip-Off West Coast Classic are ranked as well with Grand Canyon at 13 and Gannon at 15. The Tritons' third opponent in Anaheim, Simon Fraser, received votes in the poll.
What Do the Coaches Think?
UCSD was picked to finish third in the CCAA regular season standings in the league's annual preseason coaches poll. Cal State Monterey Bay topped the rankings and Cal State L.A. was second. Following the Tritons were Chico State (4th), Humboldt State (T-5th), Cal Poly Pomona (T-5th), Cal State East Bay (7th), Cal State San Bernardino (8th), Sonoma State (9th), Cal State Dominguez Hills (10th), San Francisco State (11th) and Cal State Stanislaus (12th).
‘Tis the Tourney Season
This week's season-opening Tip-Off West Coast Classic is the first of three consecutive tournaments that UCSD will take part in. On Nov. 16 and 17, the Tritons play at the West Region Crossover Classic, hosted by Western Washington in Bellingham, Wash. Also competing will be Azusa Pacific and Seattle Pacific. RIMAC Arena in La Jolla will then play host to UCSD's Thanksgiving Classic on Nov. 23 and Nov. 24. Azusa Pacific, Cal State San Bernardino and Tampa will join the Tritons.
Disney Deja Vu
UCSD played in Disney's Tip-Off West Coast Classic back in 2010 as well. Ranked 11th nationally at the time, the Tritons went 0-3 with losses against No. 13 Alaska-Anchorage (74-62), Texas Woman's University (76-58) and Grand Canyon (120-118). The two-point loss vs. GCU went to triple overtime.
UCSD in 2011-12
UCSD broke a school record for victories last season, finishing at 30-3 overall. The Tritons won the CCAA regular season crown with a 21-1 mark and advanced to the finals of the NCAA West Regional. Ranked No. 1 in the nation for seven straight weeks, UCSD defeated Chico State and Western Washington in Regional play before falling to Alaska-Anchorage in the title game. Senior guard Chelsea Carlisle was named a WBCA All-American while four Tritons were named First Team All-CCAA. Head coach Charity Elliott was tabbed the West Region Coach of the Year.
