UCSD opened its season last week at the Dixie State Classic in St. George, Utah. The Tritons went 1-1, dropping a 71-67 decision to the host before coming back the next day to defeat Fresno Pacific by a score of 83-74. It was the only regular season tournament that the team will take part in this season.
McGRATH ON POINT
Senior guard Tyler McGrath exploded for a career-high 33 points in UCSD's 83-74 win over Fresno Pacific last week in Utah (previous high was 21 at Cal State Monterey Bay on Feb. 17, 2012). 22 of his points came in the second half. McGrath was 10-for-17 from the field, establishing new career-highs with both of those numbers as well. In addition, his four assists equaled a career-best.
NEARING 600 WINS
UCSD is just one victory shy of the program's 600th. Since the 1965-66 season, the Tritons own a 599-622 overall record.
ALL BUT ONE
UCSD returns all but one of its starters from last season, including full-timers James McCann, Tyler McGrath and Justin Brue, along with part-timers MacKenzie McCullough and Ryan Peters . That group accounted for 61% of the team's scoring and 50% of its rebounds. The lone loss was big man Christian Hatch, who led the Tritons in scoring (12.5/game) and rebounding (7.3/game). The center was named to the All-CCAA Second Team.
THE DOPE ON THE ‘LOPES
Grand Canyon, which is receiving votes in the NABC national poll, enters Saturday's game with an even 2-2 record. Picked to win the PacWest title this season, the Antelopes opened their home schedule Wednesday with a convincing 69-58 victory over Western New Mexico. Joshua Lowery and Killian Larson led the team with 13 points apiece. GCU kicked off its season at the Disney Tip-Off West Coast Classic in Anaheim Nov. 9-11, where it sandwiched a win vs. Northern State (75-61) between losses against Winona State (64-66) and Southwest Minnesota State (58-69). The ‘Lopes finished their 2011-12 season with a 19-8 overall record and a 13-5 mark in the PacWest, good for a third place finish. They advanced to the NCAA West Regional, where they were knocked out of the postseason by Western Washington.

UCSD head coach Chris Carlson will be a weekly guest on XX Sports 1090's "Coach" Kentera Show. Carlson will join host John Kentera every Tuesday at approximately 10 p.m. You can listen online as well at http://bit.ly/TsuTZ6.
