No. 19 UCSD Sweeps Day Two of UCSB Winter Invite

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - The No. 19 UC San Diego women's water polo team had a dominating performance Sunday, Jan. 27 as they defeated Sonoma State and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in the final day of play at the UC Santa Barbara Winter Invitational.

UCSD was one of only five teams to sweep their matches this afternoon. The Tritons now hold a 3-1 overall record, with a perfect 2-0 start in WWPA play.


UC SAN DIEGO 11 - SONOMA STATE 6
Sonoma State came out strong on both ends of the pool in the opening eight minutes. The Seawolves goalie Ariel Lockshaw kept the Tritons from scoring a single goal while the SSU offense posted a game high three goals to take its largest lead of the game. UCSD came surging back, scoring five goals in the second quarter to bring it to a 5-5 tie at halftime.

The Tritons reversed roles on the Seawolves as they took a 4-0 lead in the third, and UCSD never let off taking the game 11-6.

Six total Tritons scored, with Sarah Lizotte matching Sonoma States total of six, respectively.

Freshman goalie Courtney Miller finished the game with six saves in the cage.

UC SAN DIEGO 20 - CLAREMONT-MUDD-SCRIPPS 12
UCSD scored a season high 20 goals to finish tournament play on a high note. The Tritons quick start showed as they posted 13 of the 20 total goals in the first half. CMS was unable to keep up early, as they netted just five goals in two quarters of play.

Miller knocked down five saves in the first three quarters of play, bringing her to 25 for the weekend. Classmate Alexsee Wilcox made her playing debut in the fourth quarter, grabbing three saves of her own.

Junior Melissa Bartow scored a team high four goals against the Athenas, with Lauren Finwall and Jolene Guiliana close behind, each adding three of their own.

UCSD will host the annual Triton Invitational, February 9-10 at Canyonview Aquatic Center. 10 of the Top 20 teams in the CWPA Preseason Coaches' Poll will be in attendance.
