TUCSON, Ariz. - The second-ranked UC San Diego softball team finished up tournament play Sunday at the NFCA Division II Leadoff Classic, suffering a pair of losses against Missouri-St. Louis and Regis.
In a Copper Bracket semifinal, UCSD fell, 11-1, in a five-inning run rule decision to Missouri-St. Louis. UMSL struck early and often, plating five runs in the opening inning, four more in the second and two in the top of the fifth.
UCSD, which totaled three hits and made eight errors in the field, scored its run in the bottom half of the second.
UMSL finished with eight hits and made one error.
The Tritons managed just another three hits in the Copper Bracket consolation game against Regis, losing by a score of 7-2.
Following a scoreless first inning, the Rangers went up 3-0 in the bottom of the second. UCSD got one back in the top of the third, but Regis scored four more times in the bottom half to go up 7-1. The Tritons rounded out the game's scoring with a single run in the fifth inning.
The Rangers had nine hits in the game.
The Gold Bracket was won by Southeastern Oklahoma State, Central Oklahoma took the Silver Bracket crown, Abilene Christian topped the Bronze Bracket and Molloy won the Cooper Bracket.
UCSD went 1-5 at the Leadoff Classic. Three of its games were against teams ranked in the top 20 nationally with two of those squads among the country's 10 best.
Overall, the Tritons are now 7-7 on the season.
UCSD returns to Triton Softball Field this week to host California Collegiate Athletic Association rival Sonoma State in a four-game series. The action starts on Friday, Feb. 22 with a 1 p.m. doubleheader. Saturday's twinbill begins at 11 a.m.
