LA JOLLA, Calif. - The UC San Diego track and field teams hosted an elite field of competition during the first day of the 2013 Cal-Nevada Championships on Friday at Triton Track & Field Stadium, where the Tritons held their own in every area.

“On our team, the standouts today were Jessica Miklaski’s third-place finish in the javelin, who was outstanding,” said UCSD women’s head coach Darcy Ahner. “Lauren Irish had a nice run in the hurdles to make it through to the final, and Kellen Levy in the 10000 was our standout male on the track today. It was a good, solid day.”

The meet, which is in its 20th running, concluded the first day of competition with the Triton women in sixth and the UCSD men in seventh. The women, who had three top-10 finishes in finals events, have accumulated 15.5 points, while the men, who earned six finishes among the top 10 in finals events, have tallied 16.

Junior Kellen Levy highlighted the day with his third-place finish in the men’s 10000-meter run, where he clocked in at 31:04.87. The Fresno native’s performance was the fourth-fastest in school history for that event. Levy was followed closely by freshman Scott Acton (31:28.22, 8th) and senior Matt Lenehan (31:43.43, 10th). Acton and Lenehan also entered the top-10 list at No. 5 and No. 7, respectively.

“To step up to a third-place finish in this level of an event, that’s really something pretty amazing; that’s a great mark,” said men’s head coach Tony Salerno about Levy.

Elsewhere on the track, sophomore Tanner Collins nabbed ninth place in the 5000, crossing the finish line in 14:51.35.

The men also made their mark in the field, most notably senior A.B. Shaheen, who finished fourth in the hammer throw with a measure of 182’5”. In addition, freshman Sean Cook took 10th in the long jump after leaping a distance of 22’2.5”.

Sophomore Keith Rose clinched a slot in the 100 finals after claiming the ninth and final position with a time of 10.87 in the prelims. Rose additionally earned an 11th-place showing in the 200 prelims (21.98).

The women had their best results in the field, especially in the throwing events.

Senior Jessica Miklaski led the way for the women in the javelin, where she made the podium in third with a throw of 135’11”. Junior Aletha Vassilakis ended with a respectable 11th-place finish in the javelin (116’1”).

Freshman Sydney Blakeley was very impressive in the pole vault, clearing a height of 11’11.75” to place in a tie for third overall.

On the track, junior Chia Chang ran a time of 37:54.49 en route to an eighth-place result. Junior Lauren Irish secured her slot in Saturday’s final of the 400 hurdles, finishing seventh overall in the prelims with a season-best time of 1:02.55.

With six events scored, San Diego State leads all women’s teams with a commanding 71 points, 45.5 more than second-place Nevada (25.5). On the men’s side, Long Beach State (45) has a 12-point lead over second-place Sacramento State (33).

The Tritons will resume competition on Saturday, starting with the women’s hammer throw event at 11 a.m. Running events will kick off with the women’s 4x100 relay at 2 p.m. All events on Saturday are finals.

“Hopefully, we’ve got some success coming,” Salerno said. “The level of competition is quite high, and anybody that we got in through finals in the lane events, that’s tremendous. That means they’re already scoring points, so it’s already a success. It’s just a matter of moving up from there. Apart from that, it’s field events. What’s going on tomorrow is going to be equally challenging; pretty much across the board.”
