ALISO VIEJO, Calif. - Closing out a road trip before the regular season's final home meet, the UC San Diego track and field teams accumulated numerous first-place finishes during the Soka Peace Invitational on Friday and Saturday while facing both local and out-of-state competition.

“We got exactly what we wanted out of the meet,” said UCSD men's track and field head coach Tony Salerno. “We had some outstanding performances in several events but more importantly, we had some of our younger people make some significant breakthroughs.”

The Tritons combined for 17 first-place showings and four podium sweeps at the meet. The women had 11 first-place finishes, including a trio of podium sweeps, while the men had six winners and one podium sweep. The UCSD women took first in six of seven track events in which they competed.

With her personal-best 55.95 performance to win the women's 400-meter dash, sophomore Sabrina Pimentel moved into No. 3 on UCSD's all-time top 10 list for that event. Pimentel also became the first Triton on the women's side this season to earn a provisional qualifier in two events with the 800 being the other.

Wins also came on the track from senior Chelsey Kamson in the 200 (25.18), junior Lorato Anderson in the 800 (2:15.27), senior Raquel Ormsby in the 100 hurdles (15.20), junior Lauren Irish in the 400 hurdles (1:04.12) and the foursome of Pimentel, sophomore Ellexi Snover, Kamson and Irish in the 4x400 relay (3:51.21). Kamson and Ormsby led podium sweeps in their respective events.

Junior Eva Isaacs climbed two slots to fourth on UCSD's all-time top 10 list for the women's shot put after tossing a personal-record mark of 43'3.25”.

Julia Wildenthaler (5'3”) tied for first and fellow freshman Sydney Blakeley (11'11.75”) won the high jump and pole vault, respectively. On the runway, sophomore Chantia Justice had the top leap of 39'4” in the triple jump. In addition, junior Aletha Vassilakis led a podium sweep of the javelin with her season-best throw, measuring 127'1”.

For the men, senior A.B. Shaheen improved his Lebanese national record to win the hammer throw. Shaheen threw a career-best distance of 191'8” on Friday at Triton Track & Field Stadium, where he defeated a trio of throwers from Tennessee as well as moved into third on the UCSD all-time top 10 list for that event.

In the shot put, senior Ryan Eckert headed the podium sweep with his winning toss of 51'2.75”. Also in the throwing events, redshirt senior Kiley Libuit won the javelin (197'3”).

Winning in the pole vault and long jump, respectively, were junior Benjamin Berthet and senior Quentin McWhorter. Berthet cleared a height of 15'5”, and McWhorter leaped a length of 21'10”.

Contributing the UCSD men's top finish in the 400 was freshman Arvind Rao, who crossed the finish line in 50.11.

The Tritons will next host their fourth and final meet of the 2013 season this Thursday through Saturday, Apr. 25-27. The three-day Triton Invitational begins with the elite discus competition Thursday at 1 p.m. The women's hammer throw will kick off five field events on Friday at 10 a.m. All remaining field events and everything on the track takes place Saturday, starting with the men's hammer throw at 10 a.m.
