Solid Day for UCSD at WIRA Championship Regatta

GOLD RIVER, Calif. - The sixth-ranked UC San Diego women's rowing team had a strong opening day at the Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association (WIRA) Championships Saturday on Lake Natoma, advancing three of its boats to grand final races.

UCSD's best result came in the form of an upset in the Varsity 8 heats. The Tritons won their heat with a time of 6:56.7, edging top-ranked Western Washington by just over a full second. UCSD's time was the fastest of the two heats, which were comprised of 13 boats total. Joining UCSD and WWU in Sunday's grand final will be Puget Sound, UC Santa Barbara, Humboldt State and Pacific Lutheran.

A time of 7:54.2 in heat one of the Varsity 4 class placed UCSD in second. Western Washington won the heat in 7:47.7. The grand final will also feature Arizona State, Humboldt State, Seattle Pacific and Long Beach State.

The Tritons' JV 8 boat also placed second in its heat with a time of 7:25.6, coming in about two seconds behind Humboldt State. Also moving on to Sunday's grand final are Puget Sound, Western Washington, UC Santa Barbara and UC Davis.

UCSD also sent out a Novice 8 boat Saturday. After placing fourth in its heat, the crew raced in the petit final, where it finished third in 7:51.2, coming in behind Seattle and Humboldt State. UC Davis was fourth and Oregon placed fifth.
