by UCSD

GOLD RIVER, Calif. - The UC San Diego men's rowing team posted strong results on the first day of action at the Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association (WIRA) Championships Saturday on Lake Natoma, advancing all three of its boats to grand finals.

UCSD saw its JV 8 crew take first place in its heat, while the Varsity 4 and Novice 8 crews placed second in their respective heats.

The JV 8 boat won heat two with a time of 6:14.4, coming in over two seconds faster than second-place UCLA. UC Irvine was third and Washington State placed fourth. Sunday's grand final will put the Tritons up against UC Santa Barbara, San Diego, Gonzaga, UCLA and UC Irvine.

UCSD's JV 8 crew also won its heat on the opening day of the 2012 WIRA Championships.

In its Varsity 4 heat, UCSD was second in 7:13.6. Seattle Pacific easily won the race, posting a time of 6:56.5. Long Beach State was third, Humboldt State came in fourth and Seattle University was fifth. Along with UCSD and SPU, Sunday's grand final will feature Loyola Marymount, Sacramento State, UC Santa Barbara and Lewis & Clark.

The Tritons' time of 6:25.9 in heat two of the Novice 8 class was good enough for second place, just over six seconds behind Gonzaga and .5 seconds in front of third place Washington State. UC Davis finished fourth, UC Irvine was fifth, Long Beach State took sixth and Oregon was seventh. The grand final will pit UCSD against Orange Coast College, San Diego State, UC Santa Barbara, Gonzaga and Washington State.

Also on Sunday, the Tritons' Varsity 8 crew will race and look to place high enough to qualify for the Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) National Championships, which will be held May 31-June 2 on Lake Natoma. UCSD will row against Gonzaga, San Diego and Santa Clara.
