Tritons Medal Twice at WIRA Championships, Varsity 8 Earns Silver

GOLD RIVER, Calif. - The UC San Diego men's rowing team earned a pair of medal finishes Sunday to conclude action at the Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association (WIRA) Championships, held on Lake Natoma outside of Sacramento.

UCSD had all four of its boats competing in grand finals. The Varsity 8 finished second, while the JV 8 came in third. The Varsity 4 and Novice 8 crews each placed sixth in their respective races.

In the Varsity 8 race, the Tritons posted a time of 6:12.2 to take silver behind winner Gonzaga, which finished in 6:08.5. UCSD was over four seconds faster than third-place San Diego. Santa Clara placed fourth.

The second-place finish secured UCSD a spot in the upcoming Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) Championship Regatta, which will be held May 31-June 2 on Lake Natoma.

The Triton JV 8 boat rowed to a third-place finish with a time of 6:14.5, just 1.2 seconds behind San Diego, which was second. UC Santa Barbara posted a 6:09.6 to top the field. UCLA was fourth, Gonzaga placed fifth and UC Irvine was sixth.

In the Varsity 4 grand final, UCSD was sixth in 7:11.2. The race was won by UCSB in 6:47.4 as the Gauchos out-paced Seattle Pacific by just .4 in the photo finish. Sacramento State was third, Loyola Marymount placed fourth and Lewis & Clark came in fifth.

The Tritons posted a 6:23.8 for sixth place in the Novice 8 event. They were only .4 behind fifth-place Washington State. Orange Coast College's time of 6:05.1 won it a gold medal. Gonzaga placed second, UC Santa Barbara took third and San Diego State was fourth.

Junior Zack Attaran and sophomore Sean Dougherty were named First Team All-WIRA, while senior Erik Goebel was selected to the league's second team.
