UCSD Wins Three Medals at WIRA Championships
Release: Monday 04/28/2013
by UCSD

GOLD RIVER, Calif. - The UC San Diego women's rowing team wrapped up the Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association (WIRA) Championships Sunday with a second-place finish in the Division II/III/Club Varsity 8 grand final on Lake Natoma.

UCSD, ranked sixth nationally, also competed in Varsity 4 and JV 8 grand final races Sunday, taking bronze medals in both.

"I really believe this was one of the best performances in team history," said UCSD head coach Colin Truex. "With medals for all three boats, it was a great day."

The Varsity 8 race came down to a photo finish, with top-ranked Western Washington winning in a time of 7:00.1, just .8 ahead of the Tritons. UCSD held an early lead in a race that was tight the whole way through, but the Vikings snuck in front with 10 strokes remaining.

UCSD crossed the finish line in front of UC Santa Barbara, No. 4 Humboldt State, Puget Sound, UC Davis and Pacific Lutheran.

The second-place finish put UCSD in a strong position to earn a bid to the NCAA Division II National Championships, which will be held May 31-June 2 at Eagle Creek Park in Indianapolis. The selections will officially be announced by the NCAA on May 20 at 2 p.m. PT.

In the Varsity 4 grand final, UCSD recorded a time of 7:44.6 to take third. WWU also won that race, posting a time of 7:41.7. Humboldt State was second, Seattle Pacific placed fourth, Arizona State was fifth and Long Beach State came in sixth.

UCSD's time of 7:22.9 in the JV 8 grand final was good for third place. Western Washington easily took gold with a winning time of 7:14.5, almost seven seconds in front of second-place UC Santa Barbara. Humboldt State was fourth, Puget Sound took fifth and UC Davis was sixth.

Seniors Ashley Travaglione and Michelle Robbins were named First Team All-WIRA, while Alyssa Dixon-Word and Tanya Vander Vis, also seniors, were selected to the league's second team.

The Tritons are next in action on Saturday, May 4 when they host San Diego State in a scrimmage on Mission Bay (6 a.m.). The team's final tune-up for the NCAA Championships will come at the 75th Dad Vail Regatta, held May 10-11 on the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia.
