Varsity Eight Takes Bronze as No. 6 UCSD Concludes 75th Dad Vail Regatta
Release: Saturday 05/11/2013

PHILADELPHIA - The sixth-ranked UC San Diego women’s crew’s Varsity 8+ boat took home bronze medalist honors on the second and final day of the milestone 75th Aberdeen Dad Vail Regatta Saturday on the Schuylkill River.

Needing a top-four finish to reach the grand final, the Tritons won the lone repechage race to start their morning, timing 7:06.95 to out-distance Grand Valley State (7:09.26) and four other crews.

UCSD returned to the water for the final a little less than an hour and a half earlier than originally scheduled due to weather issues, and placed third in a time of 6:57.43. Second-ranked Barry upset in-state rival Nova Southeastern, finishing in 6:44.19 to the top-ranked Sharks’ 6:47.89. The Tritons wound up ahead of Grand Valley State (7:01.57), No. 7 Mercyhurst (7:05.27) and Philadelphia (7:25.94).

“It was great to see the Varsity 8+ earn a medal at one of the oldest and most prestigious (regattas) in the U.S.,” said first-year UCSD head coach Colin Truex. “They raced hard in some tough conditions and hung in there with Division II frontrunners Barry and Nova Southeastern. We were also very successful against all of the Division II schools from the East region, which gives us a lot of confidence as we await a bid to the NCAA Championship.”

The V8+ boat Saturday was occupied by Shruti Kamath, Mary Beth Bilder, Kelsey Henck, Rachel Schneiderman, Ashley Travaglione, Michelle Robbins, Kelly Peterson, Claire Duesdieker and junior coxswain Catherine Sheffler.

UCSD had earlier missed out on a top-three advancement into the final of the Varsity Division II/III 4+, crossing the finish line in fifth (7:57.41) in the first of two semifinal races. The Tritons came in behind Rochester Institute of Technology (7:47.30), Mercyhurst (7:51.18), Wheaton (7:51.68) and Dowling (7:53.20), ending their regatta involvement.

That craft consisted of Olivia Knizek, Katherine Tehaney, Caitlyn Belza, Alyssa Dixon-Word and junior coxswain Anna Meng.

“Despite struggling with the windy conditions, the four put a respectable race together,” added Truex. “It was disappointing that they didn’t qualify for the grand final, especially after putting up the second-fastest time yesterday, but sometimes, rough conditions can get the best of you. They learned a lot this weekend, and will use this experience to get better going forward.

“Overall, it was a great weekend, and we look forward to coming back next year.”

UCSD now has nine days left to wait until the official announcement of what it hopes to be a berth into the 2013 NCAA Division II Championship, which will come at 2 p.m. PT on Monday, May 20, and can be viewed at
