PUEBLO, Colo. - The UC San Diego track and field team delved into both running and jumping on the women’s side during the second day of the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Friday with sophomore Sabrina Pimentel coming in eighth in the 800 prelims and freshman Kristin Sato taking 18th in the triple jump.

Held at CSU-Pueblo's own Neta and Eddie DeRose ThunderBowl, Pimentel and Sato finished a combined nine slots higher than their initial seed coming into the meet.

Seeded 13th going into the 800 prelims, Pimentel took off from the starting blocks in the third flight and reached the halfway point at 1:03.10 in third place. Though she dropped to fourth midway through the second lap, Pimentel conserved her energy and utilized it in the final turn to regain possession of third place and cross the finish line in 2:11.46.

The finish situated Pimentel in eighth place overall, five slots higher than her seed, allowing her to advance to Saturday’s final at 5:55 p.m. PDT.

The Winchester native came into the competition seeded 13th by virtue of her personal-best time of 2:10.90 to finish second in the 800 at the 27th Annual Pomona-Pitzer Invitational on April 13 in Claremont. The time ranks second on UCSD’s all-time top 10 list for that event.

Sophomore Lovan Palmer of Lincoln (Mo.) had the top time in the prelims, crossing the finish line in 2:10.36 during the first flight. Palmer was initially seeded ninth (2:09.66).

Out of the second flight in the triple jump, Sato leaped to 38’8.75” in her first attempt, a distance that placed her third among those in her flight and 12th out of 22 overall. She posted a second jump of 38’5”, which dropped her to 16th overall. Though her third attempt of 38’6.25” exceeded her second, she fell two more slots to finish the competition in 18th place. The finish was four slots higher than her seed going into the event.

Hailing from Milpitas, Sato was a late addition to the slate as she occupied the 22nd and final slot of her event. Sato’s best jump for the season was 39’6”, a personal-record leap which she recorded at the Cal-Nevada Championships on March 30 in a fourth-place showing. The leap is the third-longest in UCSD history for that specialty.

Senior Amanda Ouedraogo of Abilene Christian had the top leap in the triple jump, stretching the tape a career-best and meet-record length of 44’0.75” on her fourth attempt. Ouedraogo entered the meet with the second seed (43’6”).

The Tritons close out the NCAA Championships and their season with their busiest day on Saturday. Sophomore Nash Howe and fifth-year senior Kiley Libuit will kick off the UCSD slate of events in the men’s javelin at 11:15 a.m. PDT. Junior Clint Rosser will contend in the men’s pole vault at 1:30 p.m. PDT, just 20 minutes before senior Jessica Miklaski begins her final appearance in the women’s javelin at 1:50 p.m. PDT. Finally, Pimentel will close UCSD's season in the 800 final at 5:55 p.m. PDT.

Howe and Libuit will be seeded fifth (221’4”) and 20th (198’4”), respectively, in the men’s javelin. Rosser will begin the pole vault with a share of the No. 19 seed (16’3.5”). Miklaski will commence the women’s javelin as the 16th seed (143’4”), one slot higher than her No. 17 seed going into last year’s NCAA Championships.
