UCSD holds a 15-11-1 record from 2005-12 (didn’t participate in ’11) at the NorCal Tournament, most recently finishing 11th. The Tritons went 2-2 at the tournament last year at Stanford, grabbing wins against Air Force and UC Davis. UCSD fell to UC Irvine in the opener and Loyola Marymount in the third game. No. 1 USC was crowned champion of the NorCal Tournament for the third straight year in 2012.

The University of California, Berkeley is set to host the 16-team field in 2013. Five of the six Western Water Polo Association (WWPA) squads will be present, with Cal Baptist being absent. All nine teams from the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) conference will be competing, giving the strong 2013 field 15 teams ranked in the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) poll. The tournament is split up into four brackets, with brackets A and D playing at Diablo Valley College in Pleasant Hill while B and C will be competing at Cal. No. 11 UCSD is paired with No. 2 UCLA, No. 6 UC Santa Barbara and No. 16 Concordia. If the Tritons prevail in its first game against the Gauchos, they will play the winner of the UCLA/Concordia match at 3:25 p.m. on Saturday afternoon. From there, a win would place the Tritons in the semifinals at 12:15 p.m. on Sunday with a chance to reach the championship at 6:15 p.m. A full schedule can be found by clicking here.

The Tritons currently sit at 4-3 overall after going 2-1 in Claremont over the weekend. The Tritons opened the three-game set with a 17-12 win over Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Friday, totaling a season-high in goals. UCSD concluded the weekend on Saturday with a 9-5 win against Pomona-Pitzer before falling to No. 1 USC. The Tritons continued the season trend of spreading the wealth offensively as seven players now have scored six or more goals in 2013. Jeffrey Jarvis leads the Tritons with 13 scores, followed by Tician Toplak and Tommy Friedrich (Carlsbad/Carlsbad HS) with 12 apiece.

Cameron Ravanbach (La Jolla/La Jolla HS) now sits at 305 career saves. The junior from La Jolla HS is 66 saves away from entering the top 10 all-time career saves list, approaching assistant coach Glenn Busch’s (1997-00) mark of 371 … Head coach Denny Harper will coach his 1,000th career game on Saturday in the second game of the day … Three Tritons are closing in on double digits in goals, assists and steals in 2013. David Higginson (San Diego/The Bishop's School) has recorded seven goals, 12 assists and seven steals, Jarvis has found the back of the cage 13 times, dished out nine assists and recorded five steals while Luca De Vivo sits at six goals, eight assists and 18 steals to fill the stat sheet … Toplak set a career-high in goals scored for a match with four in the 17-12 win over Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.

UCSD head coach Denny Harper is in his 34th season leading the Tritons. He has compiled a career record of 575-419-4, with a winning percentage of .576. Harper has led the Tritons to 15 Western Water Polo Association (WWPA) titles and 11 appearances in the NCAA national championships. He has been named WWPA Coach of the Year 16 times and the Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches (ACWPA) Division II Coach of the Year five times. During the 2006 season, the Tritons set a program record in wins, completing a 26-6 season with their 14th WWPA title and a third-place finish at the NCAA National Championship tournament. Harper, a 1978 graduate of San Diego State University, began coaching at Rancho Alamitos High School, Indio High School and SDSU before coming to UCSD.

UC Santa Barbara, ranked No. 6 in the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) poll, enters the NorCal Tournament with a perfect 5-0 record. The Gauchos have played three common opponents with the Tritons, beating Pomona-Pitzer 17-7, Redlands 17-8 and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 19-9. Senior captain Matt Gronow, who has totaled 13 goals in his 2013 campaign, leads UCSB. Wolf Wigo, a three-time Olympian and former captain of the USA Water Polo Men’s National Team, is in his eighth season (116-96) as head coach of the Gauchos.

UCSD is 19-37 all-time against UCSB. The Tritons and the Gauchos clashed in the pool twice last season in Santa Barbara, resulting in two wins for UCSB. The Gauchos overpowered UCSD 18-10 in the 2012 season opener for the Tritons before UCSB grabbed a 15-8 victory at the SoCal Tournament. The Gauchos currently hold a nine-game winning streak in the series, dating back to 2008. That year, UCSD and UCSB squared off three times with the Tritons prevailing in the first two meetings before falling in the finale.
