No. 23 Tritons Play to 2-2 Draw at Chico State
Release: Friday 09/20/2013

CHICO, Calif. - The 23rd-ranked UC San Diego women’s soccer team was unable to protect a 2-0 advantage heading into the final 22 minutes of regulation, ultimately settling for a 2-2 draw with Chico State through two overtime periods in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) action Friday night at University Soccer Stadium.

With the tie, UCSD moved to 3-1-1 overall and 2-0-1 in the CCAA. Chico State is now 3-1-1 overall and 1-1-1 in league play.

UCSD failed to gain credit for a shot attempt throughout the first 45 minutes, while the host Wildcats wound up with five. Chico State had an opportunity to dent the scoreboard in the 12th minute, as Carly Singer’s shot was blocked, with leading scorer Scotie Walker’s effort seconds later being saved by sophomore Triton goalkeeper Kelcie Brodsky.

The action needed to pick up following the interval, and it certainly did just that. Within five minutes of the restart, junior All-American midfielder Cassie Callahan (Coronado/Coronado HS), the reigning CCAA Player of the Week, finally registered UCSD’s first shot, resulting in a Brianna Furner save in the Chico State net.

Junior left winger Kylene Hill opened the scoring for the Tritons at 54:57, firing a pellet toward the near post off a clever feed into space from Callahan for her first goal of the year and second of her career.

At 63:15, the lead was 2-0, as UCSD benefitted from an own goal when an attempted clear of a cross was redirected into the Wildcat net by a defender.

Chico State’s rally began just over five minutes later when Walker tallied her fourth off of a corner-kick assist by Megan Tabler, going high with her shot.

With a mere 123 seconds remaining before the Tritons could secure the full three points, the Wildcats found their equalizer, Hannah Halstenson punching in her first collegiate goal from point-blank range on the end of a Singer cross, with Walker also being given an assist.

Halstenson was in fact, unlucky to only wind up with the one score, as she had a pair of attempts come back off the crossbar, at 84:53 and again in overtime at 94:52.

Brodsky added five more saves to her league-leading total for UCSD. Furner had three for the ‘Cats, who completed the night with a 20-6 bulge in shots, including 6-0 in the extra periods.

UCSD concludes a season-long four-match road stretch to open conference play this Sunday at Cal State San Bernardino. Kickoff is slated for 2 p.m.
