by UCSD

LA JOLLA, Calif. - Myles Cooper has been named the new Director of Strength and Conditioning at UC San Diego. Director of Athletics Earl W. Edwards made the announcement Monday.

Cooper will oversee strength training and conditioning efforts for all 23 Triton athletics programs. The appointment marks his return to the La Jolla campus, having previously served as an assistant director of strength and conditioning at UCSD from July of 2010 to July of 2011.

“We’re pleased to have Myles on board as the new head of our strength and conditioning program,” said Edwards. “With his outstanding experiences at Marquette, Utah, UCLA and time spent previously here at UCSD, we know that he’s going to do a great job for us as we move forward in improving the strength and conditioning program at UCSD Athletics.”

“It’s great to be back at UC San Diego,” said Cooper. “I’m honored to be returning to this environment of incredible coaches and student-athletes, and thankful for the opportunity Earl Edwards, (senior associate athletics directors) Wendy Taylor May and Ken Grosse have given me to serve in this new capacity with more responsibility.”

Most recently, Cooper was an assistant athletic performance coach at UCLA, designing, implementing and supervising strength and conditioning programs specifically for the Bruin men’s and women’s water polo and women’s swimming and diving teams since leaving UCSD for Westwood in 2011.

Prior to his initial stint with the Tritons, Cooper interned at UCLA for six months, working with the football, women’s volleyball and track and field squads. Before that, he completed strength and conditioning internships at Marquette University in 2009 and the University of Utah in 2007. Cooper has also worked as a conditioning coach at Park City High School in Park City, Utah, and from January of 2008 to August of 2009, as a facility manager at The Orthopedic Specialty Hospital (TOSH) in Murray, Utah.

A 2002 graduate of Weber State University in Ogden, Utah, with a bachelor’s degree in athletic training, Cooper earned his master’s in 2007 from Baylor University in Waco, Texas, in exercise physiology with an emphasis in strength and conditioning.

Cooper has held Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) certification from the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) since 2003, and is also a Level 1 Sport Performance Coach through USA Weightlifting.
