Tritons Lose in Four Sets at Cal State San Bernardino
Release: Thursday 09/25/2013
by UCSD

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - Danielle Dahle (La Mesa/Grossmont HS) had a match-high 19 kills, but it wasn't enough as the 10th-ranked UC San Diego women's volleyball team was defeated in four sets by No. 20 Cal State San Bernardino Wednesday night at Coussoulis Arena.

Scores went 25-17, 25-20, 21-25 and 25-22 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) contest. With its second-straight loss, UCSD fell to 9-2 overall and 1-2 in CCAA play. CSUSB has won four straight and improved to 7-4 on the season and 3-0 in the league, tied for first place with Chico State.

"We really lost the serving and passing aspects tonight, and if you're getting beat there, it usually means that you will end up on the losing side of the match," said UCSD head coach Ricci Luyties. "Our offense couldn't get in a groove, and that makes it very hard to win games."

The Coyotes clearly won the attack battle, hitting .280 (60-18-150), almost 100 points higher than the Tritons' .185 (53-25-151) clip. Both teams were relentless at the net as San Bernardino totaled 13.0 blocks and UCSD had 12.5.

Dahle recorded her team-leading sixth double-double of the season by adding 12 digs to go along with her 19 kills. She hit .341 with five errors in 41 attacks.

Setter Heidi Sierks also tallied a double-double with a career-best 46 assists and 14 digs, which equaled her career-high.

Caitlin Brenton proved versatile for the Tritons with 11 kills, four assists, seven digs and a match-high nine blocks (one solo, eight assists). Kameron Cooper had eight blocks (one solo, seven assists), Sophie Rowe finished with 11 kills and nine digs and libero Brittany Lombardi amassed 18 digs.

Alexandra Torline had 15 kills for Cal State San Bernardino, while Tori May hit .500 with 14 put-downs. Brenna McIntosh had seven blocks, including four solos, and Arielle McCullough led all players with 21 digs.

The Coyotes have now won 10 of the last 14 match-ups between the two teams.

In a busy week of CCAA action, UCSD plays at Cal State Stanislaus Friday and at league-leading Chico State Saturday. Both matches are slated for 7 p.m. starts.
