No. 14 Tritons Fall to No. 6 UCSB for Second Time in 2013
Release: Saturday 09/28/2013

LA JOLLA, Calif. – No. 14 UC San Diego was held to a pair of second-half goals as No. 6 UC Santa Barbara grabbed an 11-7 win at Canyonview Saturday. Joe Dietrich and David Higginson each scored twice for UCSD, while Cameron Ravanbach recorded his third straight double-digit save performance with 10.

The loss marks the second time the Tritons have fallen to the Gauchos in 2013 and now sits at 7-7 overall on the year. UCSB improves to 10-2 with the win.

“I thought it was a good, tough ballgame,” said head coach Denny Harper. “The Gauchos are a good team and they proved that today, but I was pleased with some of the things we were able to accomplish today.”

Both teams came out firing on offense, combining for nine first period goals. The Gauchos grabbed the first two scores of the game before Dietrich nailed the back of the net from outside to put the Tritons on the scoreboard.

UCSD tied the match at 2-2 following a skip shot that found the net from Luca De Vivo and again at 3-3 with Dietrich’s second goal of the afternoon. The Gauchos nailed the final score of the first to lead 5-4 after one.

The second period saw the Gauchos extend its lead to 7-4. The Gauchos converted a 6-on-5 advantage with a one-timer off a great touch pass to highlight the quarter. Higginson responded for UCSD, however, and cut the deficit to 8-5 at halftime with a skip-shot that found the net to end the second.

The Tritons, looking to produce second-half magic for the third straight game, failed to produce any offense in the final two periods and was denied any shot of a comeback. Jeffrey Jarvis brought UCSD within three with a goal, but the Gauchos answered with a score of their own to end the third up 10-6.

UCSB tallied an insurance goal to start the fourth before a 6-on-5 conversion from Higginson brought the final to 11-7, his second goal of the game.

Joining the four combined goals from Dietrich and Higginson, UCSD received scores from Jarvis, De Vivo and Andy Moore in the loss.

Matt Gronow and Derek Shoemaker powered the Gaucho attack, each pouring in two goals. Chris Whitelegge and Kyle Garwick totaled six saves in the win for UCSB.

UCSD hosts No. 1 UCLA, who recently snapped No. 2 USC’s 41-game winning streak at the NorCal Tournament, next Friday. The match is slated to begin at 6 p.m. at Canyonview.
