Release: Saturday 09/28/2013

CHICO, Calif. - The 10th-ranked UC San Diego women's volleyball team earned a big California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) victory Saturday night, downing Chico State in four sets on the road to complete a weekend sweep in conference play.

Scores from Acker Gymnasium went 20-25, 25-18, 25-21 and 26-24 in favor of UCSD, which won its second match in as many nights to improve to 11-2 overall and 3-2 in the CCAA. Chico State, which has now lost two in a row, fell to 6-6 and 3-2.

The Tritons were coming off a sweep of Cal State Stanislaus Friday night.

"This was a good win for us and it's a great weekend when you can win two matches on the road in the CCAA," said UCSD head coach Ricci Luyties. "We overcame some passing problems in the first set and stayed tough the rest of the way. This win will really help us moving forward."

UCSD hit .270 (60-20-148) while holding its opponent to .182 (55-26-159). The Tritons converted almost 50 percent of their set attempts into kills.

Middle blocker Sara McCutchan had a solid night for UCSD, hitting .478 with a team-high 14 kills while adding two aces, three digs and a pair of blocks. Outside hitter Danielle Dahle (La Mesa/Grossmont HS) finished with 13 kills and nine digs, middle Kameron Cooper had nine kills and five blocks and libero Brittany Lombardi amassed 25 digs, a match-best.

For Chico State, Lindsay Quigley led all players with 17 kills and 22.0 points. Ellie Larronde was just behind with 16 kills and Emily Duran had 17 digs.

UCSD scored three straight points to go up 20-17 in the first set, but Chico exploded to win the next eight and take the frame. Quigley had three kills and a block during the Wildcats' spree.

The Tritons led for a majority of set two. With a 20-18 lead, they rattled off five consecutive points with Dahle contributing two kills and a solo block. Katy Woodward also put down a service ace in the final run.

The third set saw Chico State continue its slide on the attack as it hit just .043 with 13 kills and 11 errors. UCSD swung at .237. The Wildcats did manage to hold a lead for most of the first half until, at 14-14, a three-point run put the Tritons ahead for good.

Chico again led early in the final set. Down 9-8, UC San Diego scored three straight times via a kill from McCutchan, a Woodward ace and a double block by McCutchan and Heidi Sierks. UCSD pushed its lead to five points, but the Wildcats did not go down quietly. Trailing by four at 21-17, they tied it up with four consecutive points, three of those coming via Larronde kills. Chico shook off two match points and tied it again at 24-24, but Cooper ended it with a kill and a block along with Caitlin Brenton.

UCSD concludes a seven-match road marathon next week at Cal Poly Pomona on Oct. 3 and Humboldt State on Oct. 5. Action finally returns to RIMAC Arena on Oct. 11 and 12 as the Tritons host Cal State East Bay and Cal State Monterey Bay.
