UCSD Faces Tough Division I Competition at Aztec Invitational

SAN DIEGO - Continuing fall season action, the UC San Diego men's tennis team competed against strong NCAA Division I competition Friday and Saturday at San Diego State's Aztec Invitational.

UCSD faced opponents from Arizona, Grand Canyon, Loyola Marymount, Pacific, San Diego State, UC Irvine, UCLA and USC.

In the third singles flight, Maxence Dutreix and Guy Giubilato won their first round match-ups to move into the winner's bracket. Dutreix defeated Rafael Lira of Grand Canyon, 7-6, 0-6, 10-8. Giubilato was victorious over Jacob Spizman, also from GCU, 6-2 and 7-6. Both Tritons were knocked out in the next round, Dutreix by UCLA's Michael Guzman (6-3, 6-4) and Giubilato by Juan Florez of San Diego State (6-1, 6-0).

Andrew Malozsak played through to the semifinals of the singles consolation draw. After dropping his first round match against Arizona's Carlos Bermudez, he defeated teammate Kona Luu, 6-3, 6-2. In the back draw semis, he fell to Spizman by scores of 6-4 and 7-5.

Malozsak was also a winner in doubles as he and Devon Sousa won their Round of 32 contest, topping Spizman and Meidy Chazeau, 8-1.

UCSD will face more Division I competition as it takes part in the UCSB Classic Oct. 11-13 in Santa Barbara.
