Tritons Win Inaugural Reis Cup, Dahle Named MVP
Release: Saturday 10/11/2013
by UCSD

LA JOLLA, Calif. - In its first match back in RIMAC Arena in almost a month, the 11th-ranked UC San Diego women's volleyball team defeated league opponent Cal State East Bay, 3-1, Friday night in the inaugural Reis Cup.

Scores were 25-22, 25-22, 21-25 and 25-10.

With its fifth straight win, UCSD improved to 14-2 overall and 6-2 in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play. Losers of five consecutive matches, CSUEB dropped to 6-10 on the season and 2-6 in the conference.

It was the introduction of the Reis Cup in remembrance of former Triton Karen Reis, who was tragically killed in Coronado in 2012. The winning team of the annual event in La Jolla will have its name engraved on the Cup and will garner a match MVP award.

The first MVP honor went to UCSD outside hitter Danielle Dahle (La Mesa/Grossmont HS). The sophomore was dominant all night, finishing with a match-high 18.5 points on 15 kills, three service aces and a block assist. She hit .378 with just a single error in 37 attacks and also added 12 digs for her ninth double-double of the season. Dahle also fielded a team-high 36 receptions.

Sophie Rowe had 11 kills, two aces, 10 digs and two blocks for the Tritons. Caitlin Brenton put 10 kills, five digs and three blocks on the stat sheet, while Sara McCutchan had seven kills, a pair of aces, three digs and a match-high five blocks.

Triton libero Brittany Lombardi led all players with 20 digs.

Suzy Ni Xu collected a match-high 16 kills, the only Pioneer player with a double-digit kill total. Setter Ashia Joseph posted a double-double with 46 assists and 10 digs.

UCSD led in several statistical categories, including hitting percentage (.275 to .199), service aces (9-3), serve percentage (.947-.913), blocks (10-5) and reception percentage (.959 to .900).

After dropping the third set, the Tritons returned with a vengeance in set four, posting a match-best .474 attack with 10 kills and one error in 19 swings.

It was UCSD's first home contest after coming off a grueling, seven-match road swing. Prior to Friday, the Tritons hadn't played at RIMAC Arena since Sept. 14.

UCSD hosts Cal State Monterey Bay Saturday at 7 p.m. The Otters were defeated, 3-1, by No. 16 Cal State San Bernardino Friday night on the road. It snapped a five-match win streak for CSUMB and gave the Tritons sole possession of third place in the CCAA.
