SEASIDE, Calif. - Playing with some new faces in the lineup, the UC San Diego men's golf team owns fifth place following two rounds of play Monday at the Otter Invitational, hosted by Cal State Monterey Bay at Black Horse Golf Course. Jacob Corbin is tied for 18th as UCSD's top player.

UCSD shot a two-round total of 595, 19-over par. After posting a 306 (+18) in the opening round, the Tritons stepped up their game to record a 289 (+1) in the second, a 17-stroke improvement.

Cal State Monterey Bay, ranked eighth nationally, leads the 15-team field by 15 strokes with a 566 (-10) on its home course. Barry, the rop-ranked team in the country, sits in second at 581 (+5), while No. 6 Chico State and No. 20 Western Washington are tied for third at 591 (+15).

Individually, Barry's Mario Beltran is the front-runner with a 6-under 138. Chico State's Alistair Docherty is second (140, -4) and five players are tied for third (141, -3). Three of those in third place are from Cal State Monterey Bay.

Corbin, in his first year playing for the Tritons after transfering from Santiago Canyon College, is 4-over par with a 148. The junior shot a 78 in the first round and rebounded with a 70 in the second, the low round of the day for any Triton.

Also on the course for UCSD Monday was a trio of sophomores in Jeff Roseth (T-25th, 150, +6), Clayton Yamaguchi (T-36th, 152, +8) and Daniel Yang (San Diego/Westview HS) (T-36th, 152, +8), as well as senior Ryan Rankin (T-57th, 156, +12).

"We got off to a slow start this morning and, outside of Ryan's solid 72, I felt like we were not very sharp," said first-year UCSD head coach Jim Ragan. "However, the second round was a different story. Jacob and Jeff played well, both having under-par rounds, and Clayton and Daniel also improved their scores."

Corbin, Rankin and Roseth were in the lineup for the first time this season. Roseth is competing in his first collegiate tournament.

UCSD, which was seventh after the first round, is currently in front of several nationally-ranked teams including No. 10 Cal State Stanislaus, No. 15 Hawaii-Hilo and No. 24 California Baptist.

The third and final round gets underway Tuesday at 8:15 a.m. on the par-72, 6,699-yard Black Horse course.
