No. 13 UCSD Defeats No. 14 Sonoma State, 3-1

LA JOLLA, Calif. - A huge conference victory was earned by the No. 13 UC San Diego women's volleyball team Friday night as it defeated 14th-ranked Sonoma State, 3-1, at RIMAC Arena.

Scores of the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) match were 21-25, 25-21, 25-20 and 25-16 in favor of UCSD. With the win, the Tritons improved to 17-3 overall and 9-3 in the CCAA, while the Seawolves dropped to 16-4 on the year and are also now 9-3 in league play.

The two squads are now tied for second place in the CCAA.

UCSD used a solid .291 hitting percentage to take the edge, putting away 60 kills with 17 errors in 148 attacks. SSU finished at .231, collecting 59 kills and making 23 errors in 156 swings. The Tritons out-blocked the Seawolves, 10.0 to 5.0 and made just one service error compared to eight for Sonoma State.

Opposite hitter Caitlin Brenton led UC San Diego with 19.0 points on 15 kills, a service ace and five blocks. She hit a stellar .515 (15-1-27) and also added nine digs.

Outside hitter Danielle Dahle (La Mesa/Grossmont HS) had a team-high 16 kills, while outside Sophie Rowe tallied a double-double with 11 kills and 10 digs. Setter Heidi Sierks also hit a double-double, amassing 48 assists and 13 digs.

Kelsey Hull paced SSU with 21.0 points on 20 kills and a solo block. She also contributed 11 digs. Caylie Seitz had 19 kills, Madelyn Densberger had 10 kills and 10 digs and Nicole Gragnola dug a match-high 23 balls.

The teams split the regular season series as Sonoma State downed UCSD in four sets in Rohnert Park on Sept. 21.

UCSD hosts San Francisco State (9-11, 4-8) Saturday at 7 p.m. The Gators lost to league-leading and 12th-ranked Cal State San Bernardino in four sets Friday night in San Bernardino.

Saturday's contest will be the team's annual Dig for a Cure match in support of breast cancer awareness. Cancer survivors will be admitted free of charge while their family members and friends can purchase tickets for just $2.
