No. 10 UCSD Drops Second Straight Overtime Affair, 15-13, to No. 8 LBSU
Release: Thursday 11/07/2013

NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. – No. 10 UC San Diego surrendered five goals in the final period before falling in overtime to No. 8 Long Beach State, 15-13, Thursday night at Corona del Mar High School. David Higginson (San Diego/The Bishop's School) led UCSD in the loss with four goals.

The Tritons fall to 12-12 overall, while LBSU improves to 18-8 on the year.

The loss marks the second consecutive game the Tritons have lost in overtime and moves UCSD to 0-3 in games that have reached extra periods in 2013. The two other losses came in sudden-victory format to Santa Clara and UC Davis earlier in the year.

The Tritons held leads at halftime, 7-6, and after the third period, 10-8. UCSD grabbed its largest lead of the night at 11-8 following a score from Jeffrey Jarvis at the start of the final quarter and seemed in control of the match with 6:03 remaining.

Long Beach State climbed all the way back to tie the game at 11 following three straight goals, however. The Tritons responded with a score from Higginson to push the lead back to one, but the 49ers countered with a goal of their own to tie it with 1:59 to play.

LBSU followed with a goal 40 seconds later to take the lead before Higginson forced overtime by finding the back of the cage with 10 seconds left to tie the game at 13.

The 49ers managed to hold the Triton offense at bay in the two extra periods and scored a goal in each overtime session to win, 15-13.

Along with Higginson’s four scores, the Tritons received two goals apiece from Joe Dietrich, Chase Cockerill, Matt Michalko (San Diego/The Bishop's School) and Tommy Friedrich (Carlsbad/Carlsbad HS) and one from Jarvis, respectively. Cameron Ravanbach (La Jolla/La Jolla HS) totaled nine saves in the loss.

Six goals from Zacchary Kappos and four bocks apiece from Pavo Ljepopio and Sinan Karatay powered Long Beach State to victory.

UCSD wraps up regular season play on the road at No. 9 UC Irvine on Saturday. The match at Anteater Aquatics Complex is slated to begin at 1 p.m.
