Tritons Sweep Humboldt State, Take Sole Possession of Second Place in CCAA

LA JOLLA, Calif. - Sara McCutchan tied a NCAA hitting record and Brittany Lombardi recorded her 1,000th career dig Friday as the 12th-ranked UC San Diego women's volleyball team swept league opponent Humboldt State at RIMAC Arena. Scores were 25-21, 25-16 and 25-8.

UCSD, which won its fifth consecutive match, improved to 21-3 overall and 13-3 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). With Sonoma State falling to 13-4 in the CCAA after losing at Chico State Friday, the Tritons now own sole possession of second place in the conference.

HSU fell to 10-14 overall and 5-12 in the league. The Lumberjacks have lost four straight and six of their last seven matches.

McCutchan, a junior, was perfect from the middle on the night, connecting for kills on all 11 of her attack attempts without making an error. Her 1.000 hitting percentage tied a NCAA Division II record, which had been set six other times prior to tonight. The mark also established new CCAA and UCSD records. The previous league best was .933 (14-0-15), set exactly a week ago by Brenna McIntosh of Cal State San Bernardino. The old school record was .909 (10-0-11), set by Bonnie Wilson against Grand Canyon University on Sept. 16, 2004.

McCutchan's 11 kills were a match-high, and she added five block assists to lead all players with 13.5 points.

Lombardi, a senior libero, finished with 17 digs, giving her 1,001 for her career. She is the ninth Triton in the history of the program to attain the number. Lombardi has amassed 455 digs so far this year, the sixth-most on UCSD's single season list.

Outside hitter Danielle Dahle (La Mesa/Grossmont HS) had 10 kills, five digs and three blocks for the Tritons, while outside Sophie Rowe had a match-high 18 digs to go along with eight kills. Setter Heidi Sierks recorded a double-double with 37 assists and 11 digs.

For the Jacks, Symone Hayden and Ashley Owen each had eight kills. Kelci Renshaw had 15 digs and Kaitlyn Dunaway added 10.

UCSD dominated in almost every statistical category, most noticeably in hitting, where the Tritons held a huge .350 to .069 advantage. They hit .448 in the third and final set. UCSD had 72 digs to HSU's 44 and owned an 8.0 to 1.0 lead in the blocking department.

The Tritons swept the season series against the Lumberjacks as they took a four-set victory in Arcata on Oct. 5.

UCSD concludes a seven-match home stand Saturday by hosting Cal Poly Pomona (10-15, 8-9) at 7 p.m. The Broncos lost in four sets at No. 13 Cal State San Bernardino Friday.
