UCSD Defeats St. Katherine College, 95-71

LA JOLLA, Calif. - The UC San Diego men's basketball team shot over 56 percent from the field and used a 41-20 advantage in rebounding to handily defeat St. Katherine College, 95-71, Wednesday night at RIMAC Arena.

UCSD (2-1) dominated from the start, racing out to a 14-0 lead. MacKenzie McCullough hit a three-pointer to open the scoring and closed out the 14-point run with a dunk at the 17:29 mark. The Tritons were up by 23 points twice in the opening half and took a 53-32 lead into the break.

A 17-4 run in the second half, capped by a three-pointer from freshman Adam Klie with 9:53 left in the game, put UCSD up by 36 points, 81-45, its largest lead of the night.

Drew Dyer led the Tritons with 17 points. He was 5-for-6 from the floor, including 3-for-3 from behind the arc. The sophomore forward also added five rebounds, three assists and a block in 20 minutes of play.

Three other UCSD players finished with at least 10 points including Klie (14), McCullough (12) and Hunter Walker (12). Zach McMillan totaled a game-high 10 rebounds to go along with eight points, four assists and a steal. His point, rebound and assist totals were all career-highs. James McCann doled out eight assists. 

Duke Doulphus, Kevin Harris and Michael Robinson all saw their first career action for UCSD. Harris finished with eight points, which included a pair of three-pointers, while Doulphus had six points and three rebounds.

The Firebirds got a game-high 18 points out of Wade Shugrue. Dante Miller had 10 points and Dale Austin had a team-best three rebounds.

UCSD made 31 of its 55 shots, 56.4 percent. In the first half, the Tritons were at 69.6 percent as they drained 16 of 23 attempts. SKC hit on 21 of 52, 40.4 percent. Both squads committed 22 turnovers in a game that had 50 fouls called - 29 on UCSD and 21 on St. Katherine. The Tritons and Firebirds each netted 22 free throws.

St. Katherine (1-4), located in nearby Encinitas, is in its inaugural season of collegiate basketball.

The Tritons play another non-conference game on Saturday, Nov. 30, as they host Academy of Art at 1 p.m.
