Tritons Win All 11 Events, Cruise Past Cal State East Bay
Release: Sunday 12/21/2013
by UCSD

LA JOLLA, Calif. - The sixth-ranked UC San Diego women’s swim team won all 11 events in cruising past NCAA Division II foe Cal State East Bay, 146-59, in a dual meet at the Canyonview Aquatic Center Saturday.

Coming off of a grueling week of training following fall quarter final exams, the meet was a rare one for the Tritons in long-course meters, as opposed to the standard short-course yards. The last such competition at Canyonview came against Cal Poly two seasons ago on Dec. 18, 2011.

With the result, the Tritons moved to 2-1 on the dual season. The visiting Pioneers, receiving votes just outside of the latest College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) Division II poll, are now 2-3. Saturday marked the second dual meeting between the schools, with UCSD having previously taken a 132-67 decision in La Jolla on Jan. 5 of this year. East Bay placed second behind UCSD at the 2013 Pacific Collegiate Swimming & Diving Conference (PCSC) Championships.

Three UCSD swimmers won a pair of individual events in junior Eva Chen, sophomore Colleen Daley and freshman Sierra Gage.

Chen took the 200-meter individual medley in 2:30.14 over freshman teammate Jaimie Bryan (2:30.82) before another narrow victory in the 100 breaststroke (1:17.71) over East Bay’s Courtney Schwiesow (1:17.99).

Daley was fastest in the two shortest freestyle events, sprinting 27.54 in the 50 and then 1:00.69 in the 100, touching out East Bay’s Caitlin DeNise, who went 27.65 and 1:01.41, respectively, in both races. DeNise was a teammate of Triton captain and fellow senior Anji Shakya at Davis Senior High School.

Gage, a rookie out of Mission Viejo and Capistrano Valley High School, out-distanced the field in the two longest races of the afternoon, timing 9:35.03 to rally past senior teammate Erika Rodman (9:44.36) in the 800 free, and 4:42.82 in the 400 free to again finish just ahead of Rodman (4:45.38).

The remaining individual event wins went to Shakya in the 200 free (2:09.39), sophomore Naomi Thomas in the 100 butterfly (1:05.25) and senior Sandy Hon in the 100 backstroke (1:09.90). Shakya is the reigning NCAA Division II national champion in the 200-yard freestyle.

UCSD also took the two relays on the day in comfortable fashion. Shakya led off the first-place Triton foursome in the 400 medley relay to open the meet, combining with Bryan, Thomas and junior anchor Sierra Robbins for a time of 4:34.38. She later opened the winning 400 free relay (4:04.64) ahead of freshmen Austine Lee and Catherine Woo, and Daley as the anchor.

UCSD produced a pair of clean 1-2-3 sweeps of the maximum 16 points, with senior Katie McBride finishing third (9:47.98) behind Gage and Rodman in the 800, and Thomas touching third (2:33.29) in the 200 IM after Chen and Bryan.

The Tritons still have one more date left for the 2013 calendar year. They will be joined by the eighth-ranked UCSD men in a dual competition across town at San Diego State on Monday, Dec. 30. Air Force will also be present for a meet set for a 2 p.m. start at the Aztec Aquaplex.
