Tritons Fall to No. 21 Chico State, 73-50

LA JOLLA, Calif. – UC San Diego struggled from the floor as No. 21 Chico State grabbed a 73-50 win at RIMAC Arena Saturday night. The Wildcats drained 10 three’s and finished 51.1% from the field to earn the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) win.

UCSD falls to 5-5 overall and 1-5 in the CCAA following the loss, while CSUC improves to 8-2 overall and 4-2 in conference play with the win.

The Tritons were led by 15 points and three assists from James McCann (Carlsbad/La Costa Canyon) in the loss, while Drew Dyer added nine points.

UCSD was in the game early with the score tied at 14 with 11:55 to play in the first half before the Wildcats ran off a 23-7 run to end the first period. Chico State rattled off 20 consecutive points to take control of the game and never looked back as the Wildcats grabbed a 37-21 lead at the intermission.

Chico State nailed six-of-10 attempts from behind the arc in the first half and shot 44.4% from the floor. Jordan Semple, who finished with a double-double of 25 points and 10 rebounds, scored 16 points in the half alone.

The Wildcats continued the hot shooting into the second half, eventually grabbing their largest lead of the night of 26 points, 60-34, at the 8:02 mark to play in regulation. The Tritons had no answer on the offensive side as the game ended in favor of CSUC, 73-50.

The Tritons finished 34.5% from the floor on 20-of-58 shooting and only converted on four-of-21 attempts from three. In the loss, Adam Klie finished with six points and five rebounds, Zach McMillan totaled six points and six rebounds, and MacKenzie McCullough ended the night with five points and five boards.

The Wildcats were led by Semple’s double-double and also received 12 points apiece from Amir Carraway and Sean Park.

The Tritons wrap up their season-long six-game homestand next week as they face Cal State East Bay on Friday, Jan. 10, and Cal State Monterey Bay on Saturday, Jan. 11. Tipoff for both games at RIMAC Arena is slated for 7:30 p.m.
