LA JOLLA, Calif. – James McCann scored 17 points and dished out eight assists as the UC San Diego men’s basketball team earned a win over Humboldt State, 75-61, Saturday night at RIMAC Arena. The Tritons finished .462 from the floor and drained 11 three-point field goals to down the ‘Jacks for the fourth consecutive meeting.

UCSD improves to 10-8 overall and 6-8 in the CCAA with the win, while HSU falls to 8-12 overall and 3-11 in conference play.

McCann (Carlsbad/La Costa Canyon HS) was the highlight of the night, finishing six-of-nine from the floor and two-of-three from deep. His eight assists tonight brings his career total to 421, which marks a new UCSD all-time career record in the Division II era (since 200-01 season). The senior also tallied two rebounds, a steal and a block to his line.

UCSD also received 17 points from Drew Dyer, who finished five-of-12 from the field and four-of-nine from three. Aleks Lipovic finished with 16 points in the win, including four treys, five rebounds and two assists.

The Tritons opened the game with two straight threes, one each from Dyer and Lipovic, to jump out to a quick 6-0 lead. The first half saw four ties and eight lead changes, but UCSD managed to lead 35-30 at halftime.

The second-half continued to be a battle, as HSU grabbed their first lead of the second half, 52-51, with 11:50 to play. The Tritons responded with a McCann layup and a three from Lipovic to grab the lead right back, 56-53.

Following an HSU free-throw, UCSD ran off a 13-0 run to take control of the game and grab a 69-54 advantage. The run was started with a Hunter Walker layup and capped off by a dagger of a three from Dyer. UCSD eventually grabbed their largest lead of the night of 18 with 1:19 remaining before finishing off the win, 75-61.

UCSD held HSU to a shooting percentage of .393 and outrebounded the ‘Jacks by a 36-34 margin. The Tritons scored 12 points off turnovers and received 11 points off the bench.

Treavon Francis played big minutes off the bench to score seven points, while Adam Klie finished the night with five points, four assists and four rebounds. Walker just missed a double-double after grabbing a game-high 10 rebounds and scoring nine points.

The ‘Jacks were led by 15 points from Parker Farris, while Allan Guei finished with 14 points, four rebounds and three assists. David Howard (13) and Jordan Mackie (12) were the final two HSU players in double-figures in scoring.

The Tritons play at Chico State and Cal State Stanislaus on Feb. 7 and 8 before traveling to Cal State Monterey Bay and Cal State East Bay on Feb. 14 and 15.
